Freshwinds’ Integrated Medicine Programme: Research, Education and Clinical Practice

Freshwinds is an innovative charity in Birmingham (UK) founded on holistic principles. We work with individuals to find a meaningful resolution to their situation through a number of programmes including, Integrated & Complementary medicine, Advocacy and Employment advice, HIV, substance misuse, refugees and ex-offender services.

The Integrated Medicine Programme focuses on promoting the use of complementary therapies using an integrated health framework. Integrated services are offered at our centre in Selly Oak and on an outreach basis to adults and children with life-threatening or life-limiting conditions. There is also a huge commitment to research, education and clinical practice. Our latest research study is in collaboration with the University of Birmingham and Good Hope Hospital, on the benefits of Healing therapy for adults with irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis. Spearheading our education and training is Freshwinds Institute of Integrated Medicine (FIIM) and the Children’s Complementary Therapy Network (CCTN).

FIIM was established in 2000 with an aim is to bridge the gap between conventional and complementary medicine through learning and education and promote the use of Integrated Medicine. Since its inception the Institute has been offering unique undergraduate and post graduate training to complementary therapists, doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, medical and nursing students. This has now extended to e-learning through accredited CPD undergraduate courses. A free accredited CPD course in integrated medicine is also available.

Under development is also the online Mitra Postgraduate Masters Programme in integrated medicine. The programme allows student to undertake modules either as standalone CPDs, or build up towards a post graduate certificate, diploma or masters award. Development of this programme has involved the efforts of an international team of experienced integrated and

complementary medicine professionals, therefore ensuring a high standard of teaching. The much anticipated launch of this programme is planned in the next few months.

Recently FIIM also developed a low cost relaxation CD (Portraits of Calm) with visualisation exercises accompanied by soothing music, including two specifically designed for children. The CD (or individual tracks) can be purchased online, where samples of the tracks can also be listened to.

The CCTN has an international membership of over 400 members. The network supports the use of complementary therapies for children by offering a platform to promote and share training, education and clinical practice. CCTN membership is Free and open to any professional interested in using complementary therapies for children. Members include complementary therapists, doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, teachers, researchers and service developers. One poster campaign “Tell Your Doctor”, encourages parents to discuss their use of complementary therapies with their doctor. The poster can be viewed (and freely downloaded) from the website.

Bi-annually CCTN conferences have touched many areas of interest including palliative care, cerebral palsy and autism. The 5th CCTN conference will be held on Saturday 7th May 2011 at Birmingham Children’s Hospital (UK). It will highlight Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). The programme includes key presentations on ADHD and interactive workshops on unique complementary therapy techniques in various disciplines. Additional details are available on the website.
