for example–were created together, they will forever be linked. They can influence each other instantaneously no matter how far apart they may be. Since all matter in our cosmos was created together in the Big Bang (or so the current cosmological theory says), then every particle in the universe must be entangled, including you and me. Quantum physicist Antoine Suarez says that entanglement tests show that these effects are caused by “influences that originate from outside space-time.” That influence may be from another dimension or an alternate universe (see the multiverse theory of physics), but the facts appear to show that something is exerting its influence on our world from somewhere outside the known cosmos. Of one complex entanglement experiment, in which the results

The Power of Placebo in IBS

Just about everyone knows about the placebo effect–if you believe a treatment will help, it likely will. It was commonly thought, however, that to get a positive benefit, you couldn’t know you were taking a placebo. You had to think you were actually using a treatment with actual curative effects. But new research suggests that may not be true, at least for people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

As reported in New Scientist (Jan 8-14, 2011), in one study, a group of people with IBS were divided into two: one group got no treatment while the other group was told they would be taking an inert pill, a placebo. In effect, neither group would get anything that was known to help them. But the twist was that even though the placebo group knew the pill they would be taking twice a day had no chemical curative value, they were told to think that it did. The surprising result was that 59% of the placebo group experienced relief, compared to 35% of the control group. “The

contradict all known laws of physics, Suarez says ”Physics experiments cannot demonstrate the existence of God, but this test shows that today’s physics is compatible with all major religious traditions. There is strong experimental evidence for accepting that nonmaterial beings act in the world.”

James Polkinghorne, a venerable name in physics (a particle physicist who left the field to become an Anglican priest) and one of the first modern physicists to publicly deal with these questions, says that “Physics asks how the world works, and when it answers that question it finds a very deep, marvellously patterned order. But it doesn’t explain where that order comes from. I believe that the order is a reflection of the mind of God.”

placebo was almost twice as effective as the control,” concluded Ted Kaptchuk, the Harvard Medical School study director.

While the study was very small and so its value questionable, its unique take on the placebo effect opened a new avenue of exploration about placebo, self-healing and the mind- body connection. As Kaptchuk explained, this mind-body approach might be able to “affect illnesses where self-appraisal is important, such as depression.”

Although a study in 2008 found that 33% of physicians queried admitting to prescribing placebos–dummy pills–to their patients at one time or another, most physicians also express concern about such fibbing, even if it is in the interest of healing. Kaptchuk’s study may provide some emotional relief, for it appears that it doesn’t matter if the patient knows the pill is a placebo as long as they are counselled that it can help. Although he still expresses concerns, Kaptchuk said, “Now we have shown that there are ethical ways of harnessing the placebo effect.”
