Everyday Activity Calorie Counter


We all know that exercise is part of a healthful life and that many diet strategies advocate upping the calories you burn every day. Maybe you won’t have to work out so hard at the gym if you focus on burning more calories in your everyday life. Most of us can easily burn up to an additional 300 calories a day by focusing on household chores, which can add up to an extra pound lost every two weeks! The number of calories that researchers project that we burn in common activities varies from source to source, but here are some averages, most based on a 150-pound person.


• You use up 60 calories talking on the phone for thirty minutes.


• Thirty minutes of dusting burns 80 calories; the same amount of time vacuuming consumes another 119.


• Ironing for a half hour will burn off about 76 calories, and you’ll burn another 70 or so when folding clothes for a half hour.


• You can use up about 350 calories playing cards for three hours, which is more than you expend pushing a lawn mower (324 calories) for the same amount of time. But add in another half hour of raking grass clippings or leaves and your gardening chores consume another 170 calories.


• Daily grooming (washing and drying your hair, shaving, etc.) takes about 110 calories. Dressing eats up another 70.


• Typing on your computer uses about 66 calories every thirty minutes. You’ll expend the same amount of energy for every thirty minutes you spend studying.


• Take the stairs, instead of the elevator, and you’ll expend about 100 calories.


• Spend thirty minutes washing the dog and burn 128 calories.


• Sitting reading or watching TV for a half hour consumes about 40 calories.


• Eight hours of sleeping burns about 360 calories.
