The Winged M History: the 1940s
In 1945, The Winged M continued to acknowledge World War II and its effects on MAC and its members. The November 1945 cover of the maga- zine, top left, celebrated the end of the war. Inside, the description of the cover photo reads, “‘Gee, it’s good to have you home.’ This is the wording of the attractive sign in colors that greets returning MAC members in the armed forces as they enter the Club. In our cover photograph this month, President William J. Collins is shown greeting E.S. “Bill” Morgan, Marine Corps, Louis “Hap” Kuehn, Navy, and Thomas G. Moyer, Army, each of whom is a nationally-known athlete – in the football, swimming and boxing fi elds, respectively.” The Winged M also ran a monthly page titled Winged “M” Members With the Colors, below right, with updates on various members serving in the military. The illustration at the bottom of the page honors the 15 members who gave their lives in the service of their country, and the grand total of 775 members who were in the armed forces. The magazine advertisement, bottom left, was often seen in the magazine during wartime as well. Today, 59 members fall into the service suspense category, which is intended for members serving on active duty while in the armed forces, Peace Corps, VISTA or similar service either as a volunteer or draftee.
