ecently I have enjoyed many
inspirational moments as I go about my life or my career at the club. On the day the Joe Loprinzi Inspirational Award winner was announced at the Banquet of Champions, I had the honor of meeting award nominee Dr. Anne Lazar. I was wowed by our discussion and inspired to know that she had been chosen the winner by her fellow athletes and the athletic award subcommittee. She described to me some of her challenges, and she has risen to them all with determination and grace of a cham- pion. The committee picked a wonderful person and an inspiration for us all to live by. I congratulate Anne for her courage, grace and the inspiration she shared with me. That same day I noticed a guest who was

looking for the Center Ballroom. She was blind and was wandering around the club with her white mobility cane. I asked her if I could assist in any way, and she informed me she was trying to find the Center Ballroom. I assisted her to the Center Ballroom, where she walked in with courage, self-confidence, and a smile that most do not share. I have also been inspired by a quotation by
George Allen, the legendary and renowned football coach. The late Joe Loprinzi handed me a set of quotes by Allen soon after I started working at the club. “What is a workout? A workout is 25 percent perspiration and 75 percent determination. Stated another way, it is one part physical exertion and three parts self-discipline. Doing it is easy once you get started. A workout makes you better today than you were yesterday. It strengthens the body, relaxes the mind, and toughens the spirit. When you work out regularly, your problems diminish and your confidence grows. A workout is a personal triumph over laziness and procrastination. It is the badge of a winner – the mark of an organized, goal- oriented person who has taken charge of his, or her, destiny. A workout is a wise use of time and an investment in excellence. It is a way of preparing for life’s challenges and proving to yourself that you have what it takes to do what is necessary. A workout is a key that helps unlock the door to opportunity and success. Hidden within each of us is
an extraordinary force. Physical and mental fitness are the triggers that can release it. A workout is a form of rebirth. When you finish a good workout, you don’t simply feel better, you feel better about yourself.”
Innovation
One of my passions has always been to innovate to improve upon what we have. How do we make a process, product or service better? Innovation can be made with or without investment. We have committed to do both to improve your member experience. We are working to innovate signature
service and have staff take that extra effort to reach out to the membership in more positive ways. How can staff recognize members by name, smile and offer a greeting, acknowledge members with eye contact and be welcoming? I receive many complaints daily from the membership about trails of popcorn throughout the club after 3 p.m. To create a cleaner environment around the club, popcorn is plentiful in the Sports Pub only starting Tuesday, May 31. Eat and enjoy as much as you like in the Sports Pub but please do not carry it out throughout the club. I will position myself by the Sports Pub on May 31 starting at 3 p.m. to hear your feed- back about our new policy. Others in senior staff will communicate this message until we get compliance. I think you will agree this will lead to a much cleaner club. The Men’s Bar is currently going through
an innovative process. We are adding more dining space, creating a larger bar and dining space in the hallway between the old card room and Seasons, and making a waiting lounge in Seasons. A new card room is being created next to the windows in the Seasons. Lastly, the Men’s Locker Room is under- going some significant renovations that are practical and appropriate.
Information Communication is paramount to our
success. How do we assimilate timely and effective information to our members? Communication with more than 20,000 members is a daunting task in which we all need to participate to be most successful. See page 17 of this month’s magazine to see the Men’s Bar upgrades and expansion and accompanying neighborhoods. In May we will follow-up with Men’s Locker Room and Women’s Lounge plans. WM
