Explore Forest Park with Local Author

ituated in the hills west of Portland, Forest Park, at more than 5,100 acres, is one of the largest urban parks in the world and the only city wilderness park in the United States. The park is home to an identifi ed 117 species of birds and 53 species of mammals, statistics that rival some of the nation’s national parks. Nearly 100 miles of trails provide access to the park and its wonders. And all of this is within minutes of downtown Portland.

S

The Walking & Hiking Committee invites members and guests to spend the evening of Monday, May 23 with Marcy Cottrell Houle, author of One City’s Wilderness: Portland’s Forest Park, published by Oregon State University Press. This updated and expanded edition of her original book not only includes history, geology, wildlife

and vegetation, but also includes direc- tions and excellent maps for walks and

hikes of varying length, diffi culty and scenery, covering every trail within the park. Readers are encouraged to do all the hikes in an “all trails challenge,” detailed in the book, and learn about the unique nature of the park by setting foot upon every trail. Houle shares the history of Forest Park,

introduces the people who fought to preserve it and discusses the role stewards play today. Learn about the park’s critical wildlife corridor, its exceptional watersheds and the native inte- rior forest habitat. Hear how she plans to help walkers and hikers complete the challenge to hike every trail.

Houle is also the author of Wings for My

Flight, which received an Oregon Book Award and a Christopher Award, and The Prairie Keepers: Secrets of the Zumwalt, a New York Times Earth Day Selection and an Oregon Book Award Finalist.

The presentation begins at 7 p.m. Come at

6:30 p.m. to meet Houle. There is no charge. Guests are welcome. Registration is requested to ensure adequate seating for all. Register online on the walking and hiking homepage, or call 503-517-7539. WM
