Members Walk Step by Step Across America F

or 25 years, MAC’s Walk Across America has been an incentive program for members starting and maintaining a regular walking regimen. Some members have been counting miles since the start of the program. Others just joined in 2011. Some participants have logged thousands of miles. Others have just begun the journey to their first 100 miles. This is not a competition among members, but a challenge to oneself.

Most participants select a yearly mileage goal, knowing that setting an attainable yet challenging goal helps keep them motivated throughout the year. Others need no written specific mileage goal, as walking and recording miles has become an integral part of daily living. The name of the program, Walk Across America, was intended to make mileage tabulation more interesting. Miles are tracked by a selecting a starting and ending destination in America. Through the years, walkers have progressed beyond the boundaries of North America and walked in selected locations around the world, but the name of the program remains. Many walkers actually set foot on selected routes, but, for most, the route has always been

symbolic. Some walkers are so motivated to walk regularly that they no longer set mileage or destination goals. Keeping track of mileage is incentive enough to keep them walking regularly. Members who track their mileage through Walk Across America are listed in The Winged M each time another 100 miles are recorded. Look for the column, Member Numbers Walking Miles. Members who accumulate at least 100 miles each month are seen regularly in this column. Those who take a bit longer to accumulate those 100 miles are listed when they do. Congratulations to everyone. Although yearly goals follow the calendar year, members can enroll in Walk Across America at any time during the year and start officially recording miles. Registration forms are on the east wall of the Indoor Track. Forms can also be downloaded at theMAC.com. On the main MAC web page, select Athletics. Select Walking & Hiking. There is a link to Walk Across America from there. Set a goal, and start logging those miles today. For more information, call 503-517-7539. WM
