Page 13 Kesselring’s Crew’s Title Hunt Ends in the D-I Tourney Quarterfinals

After manhandling the Londonderry High Lancers twice during the 2010-11 regular season, the Pink- erton Academy ice hockey team wasn’t able to manage that feat a third, vital time. Coach Casey Kessel- ring’s PA squad’s champi-

onship hopes evaporated last Saturday with an unexpect- ed, 3-2 loss to the LHS Lancers in Division I quar- terfinal-round tournament play at The Ice Den in Hooksett. The seventh-seeded up- starts from Londonderry did a superb job of checking the powerful, second-ranked Astros and making it plain

that they wouldn’t be man- handled a third time. “I thought we outplayed them in the first period, but after that they owned it,” said Kesselring. “They just wore us down in the second and third periods.

deserve a lot of credit.” Londonderry snagged a 2-0 lead in the first period, thanks to goals from fresh- man forwards Brian Greene (four minutes in) and Eric Coburn (with 3:21 left). The Coburn tally was of the fluky variety, with the puck deflecting off a PA defense- man and past stunned Astros’ goalie Dave Belanger. But Pinkerton chopped the Lancers’ momentum way down with a rebound goal by Zach Sanford with just 5.8 seconds remaining in the first stanza to make the count 2-1.

The hotly-contested second period was score- less until just 4:55 re- mained, when the Lancers regained their two-goal lead on another tally by Greene. But Pinkerton answered with another late goal of its own, with J.D. Dudek setting up Brendan Philippon with just 1:16 to go in the period to make it a 3-2 contest. Pinkerton drew a penal- ty with just 40 seconds to go in the middle period, so the hosts had to spend that span and the first 1:20 of the second period making sure that Londonderry was- n’t able to get its lead back up to two goals.

Succeeding at that, the Astros then plunged into trying to get the game- tying marker past LHS freshman keeper Beau
