Mars remains mesmerised by Elvis and would happily spend all his time focusing on the ultimate global pop icon. “If I had only Elvis to work on for the rest of my career he would fi ll my days. His legacy is daunting.” He now has open access to over 60,000 images of Elvis from the Grace- land Archives, which eventually inspired this new series in the UK. Mars has been the leader of Chicago’s
Pop Movement for the past 20 years and has collaborated with some of the biggest names in contemporary Pop Art. His journey began while living in New Orleans, where he saw a serigraph print by Alexander Calder that totally changed the direction of his art. Drawn in by its big broad fl at sweeping strokes of colour, he decided there and then to learn the art of silkscreening.
Much of his work refl ects the pop culture
of his childhood in the 1960s and 70s, notably the idealised American family, comic book fi gures, television and space age inventions. Combining avant-garde innovation with a deep Pop Art sensibility, Mars fuses and confuses the traditional dis- tinctions between high culture and low art. “If you look at the collaborations between Warhol and Basquiat," he said, "you will understand what my art is about. In the mid-to-late 80s, with the death of these two leaders, I felt this was my place. I was coming up right behind them and I would start at the end of their trail. This was and is Pop Art.”
