Why does my dog……?
Written by Stacey Chamberline of 'i can canine'.
Q) Not bother with other dogs off lead, but growl and bark at a passing dog when on the lead?
A) Some dogs will confuse their owners with this behaviour. An apparently friendly dog will seemingly change personality at the end of its lead. The reason for this is that the dog is a social animal. Like people, it exists in large groups and for the benefi t of the individual and the species in general, confrontation and acts of aggression are rare and best avoided. It is not in anyone’s interests to become injured through fi ghting. In order to avoid any confrontations, the dog will adopt certain behaviours aimed at reducing the risk of
actual confl ict. A dog may freeze, display submissive postures or run away. A dog at the end of a lead, however, is limited in its choices, therefore when it meets what it considers a threat, it may think to itself, ‘I cannot run, maybe if I act all tough, I will scare this threat away.’ The dog may well be anxious or timid and yet do its best to convince everyone else that it is fi erce and best avoided. The growling and barking in this instance are essentially a defensive gesture.

dog’s pleasure and enjoyment in the game. The key is to know your dog and learn which sounds mean what. Usually, a low steady growl will be the warning one. Never attempt to remove an object from a possessive dog by confrontation, you will only lose by being bitten or frightened off. Instead it is ok to do a trade. Offer the dog something of greater value than what it already has; this may seem like bribery, but it achieves the desired outcome and does not reinforce possessive behaviour.
