Revving up her motorcycle for the trip of a lifetime is Sheffield 8’s Julia Harley. Kat Withers reports

To Russia with love R

IDING a motorbike 4,000 miles in two weeks may not be for everyone, but it’s exactly what Julia Harley is planning to do to raise money for disadvantaged teenagers in Russia.

Taking part in a return ride to Moscow, Julia, of Greenhill Road, hopes to raise at least £2,000 for the charity Love Russia, a Christian cause committed to improving the lives of orphaned and abandoned children and young people in deprived parts of Russia.

Leaving the Isle of Wight on Wednesday, June 1st, on her Kawasaki, Julia said: “I will be making what I think will become my journey of a lifetime - a trip to Russia on a motorbike and with a noble purpose.”

No stranger to challenges, in 2009, Julia, who is the chair of the local branch of the Christian Motorcyclists’ Association, rode 1,000 miles in 24 hours.

She added: “There is also a very personal reason I wish to make this ride. It is in honour of my sister Patty, a keen and good motorcyclist, who introduced me to the joys of motorcycling but sadly died of cancer a few years ago.

“Her heart was for young people and she put much effort into Youth Bike in the Merseyside area. I know she would have been with me in this challenge. It is her bike I am riding.”

In Russia, young people have to leave their orphanages at 16, but official studies show that only 9% manage to integrate into society, with the rest falling into criminality, drugs and even suicide.

Since Love Russia

launched a project in 2000 to help cover the cost of these young people’s basic needs while they studied at college, 96% of those who have taken part in the programme have managed to successfully integrate themselves.
