Red Nose Day is a nationwide fundraising event which takes place every two years. The technical solution in place to support Red Nose Day 2011 builds on 2009’s hugely successful UK IT Industry Award-winning cloud computing platform, with continued emphasis on resilience and scalability. Comic Relief operates two core platforms with Carrenza, a donation platform and a core websites platform. The donation platform consists of a highly-tuned donation application built in Java and backed by a stretched Oracle Real Application Clusters environment that runs active across two data centres. This allows Comic Relief to process hundreds of thousands of donations in just a few hours. The core websites platform supports all Comic Relief websites. The websites are all built using the open source CMS Drupal on a scalable LAMP technology stack with bespoke deployment procedures overcoming a well-known barrier for Drupal at the enterprise level. Both platforms use VMware vSphere 4 for virtualisation and sit on HP ProLiant BL460 blade server with HP 3PAR T-Class Storage Systems -- virtualised, multitenant storage arrays built for public and private cloud computings -- to provide agile and efficient storage. Cisco 6500-series networking (including ACE and FWSM modules) and Zeus Technology provide security, switching and smooth traffic management at the front whilst PayPal and WorldPay provide secure payment processing at the back.

Land Registry, the government department responsible for

keeping and maintaining the Land Register for England and Wales, has adopted open source data management tool, Talend Integration Suite. This is part of a strategic move to improve data integration for its business intelligence (BI) warehouse and to support the department’s new business intelligence project. Land Registry aims to maintain and develop a stable, effective land registration system, guarantee title to registered estates and interests in land and enable confident dealings in property and security of title by providing ready access to up-to-date and guaranteed land information. Steven Philips, Delivery Manager

at Land Registry commented: “Maintaining concise and accurate data for business intelligence (BI) is crucial to Land Registry’s operational performance and we needed a flexible and cost effective tool that would improve data integration for the BI warehouse.” Talend Integration Suite is the first open source enterprise data integration solution, designed to support multi-user development, and to scale to the highest levels of data volumes and process complexity. It is used for ETL, data synchronisation and data migration. Phillips added: “With Talend Integration Suite, Land Registry will benefit from being able to use ETL processes - extract, transform and load - to extract data from a number of different repositories and in multiple formats to provide consistent data for business intelligence.” François Méro, VP of Global Sales,

Talend commented: “Land Registry has to handle vast amounts of complex data on the ownership of property and land across the nation. Ensuring that its business intelligence data is up to date and accurate is paramount and using an open source data management tool is an efficient and cost effective way to achieve this.”
