Every once and a while a construction project brings to- gether two respected companies for the first time and re- sults in a success above and beyond expectations. This is the case with the Bathurst Water Treatment Plant upgrade project.
The two companies, Design Built Mechanical Inc. and
R.V. Anderson Associates Limited, worked together along with other contractors to give the City of Bathurst a more efficient plant with a greater capacity to help serve the city for many years to come. “We were able to take the exist- ing water treatment plant and de- sign the upgrades required to provide an increased water capac- ity and increase the level of confi- dence in the automation of the plant. That’s a great thing for the City of Bathurst,” said John Gal- lant, branch manager and senior associate for R.V. Anderson Asso- ciates Limited’s Moncton office. This intricate project took sev- eral years from start to finish but was completed to the City of Bathurst’s specifications in 2010. This finished product was actually such a success that R.V. Anderson and the city received the Project of the Year - Engineering Award/Environmental Award for 2010 from the Atlantic Canada Water and Waste- water Association (ACWWA).

The award is given to a municipality or utility and their consultant in recognition of an outstanding project. The re- cipient must be a water or wastewater project that demon- strates innovation and use of state-of-the-art technology. Three awards are given in three different categories based on population. This project fell into the medium utility category, serving the 5,000 to 25,000 customer range. “I was happy for them and I look forward to working with them again,” said Marcel Boudreau, branch manager for Design Built Mechanical Inc. and project manager, congrat- ulating Gallant and his team. “It’s always great to be recognized by your peers. It was also really wonderful for the City of Bathurst to be able to be in attendance at the ACWWA,” said Gallant. He said R.V. Anderson later presented the award to the Bathurst City Council during one of its council meetings to show residents the project’s high quality of work, which had resulted from city council’s determination.
R.V. Anderson, who specializes in water, wastewater, transportation, and urban development projects, was con- tracted in 2006 to assess the plant’s requirements and worked to co-ordinate the contractors completing the proj- ect. Design Built Mechanical, a well-known firm in New Brunswick, was one of them. The project’s scope included an upgrade of the existing filter system and clarifiers, installation of a new low-lift pump and variable frequency drive, conversion of the
