THE TURNER REVIEW
Oasis were the sound of my youth, even though I was too young to appreciate them! Looking back however, I curse the fact that I wasn’t born 7 years earlier, because I’d have been able to enjoy them. They were the typical, Northern, working-class rock band. They had a swagger and an arrogance that appealed to some- one like me, who had neither of those things.
Really, Oasis were the 90s answer to punk rock. They were kind of anarchic, kind of cheeky but also kind of deep. They inspired hundreds of imitators. Some of them very successful. Kasabian, Hard-Fi, The Editors and The Arctic Monkeys all owe a debt to the work of the Gallagher brothers, who gave Northern music back its edge.
I was at university when they broke up. Personally, I don’t think I was too concerned. Maybe for a moment I was saddened. But I knew people who were gutted. One girl in my seminar group cried all morning because it meant she would never get to see them live. The band split because differences between Liam and Noel (which had existed from day one) had never really gone away. The two went their separate ways, but the rest of the band stayed with Liam. He promptly renamed them Beady Eye and set
about making his debut album, before his brother Noel could steal the limelight. The result is Different Gear, Still Speeding.
Liam was always considered the less talented of the two brothers. After all, Noel wrote all the hits and played lead guitar on all of them. All Liam was ever seen to do was stand with his hands behind his back and sneer the lyrics into the mike. Whilst Different Gear, Still Speeding doesn’t dispel the myth that Liam was always riding on Noel’s coat-tails, its not a bad album. In fact, it’s actually very good!
