THE SON OF A PENTECOSTAL preacher, Paul Thorn has been known to sing about the sacred and the profane, often with a sly wit and not a trace of irony. Witness: Pimps and Preachers, his latest record, is about the mentoring he received from his preacher father and his uncle, a one-time pimp who spent time in San Quentin. Raised in Tupelo, Miss. – the birthplace of Elvis – the former factory worker and professional boxer would be a Nashville superstar if Music City were hungry for smart and funny singer-songwriters rather than watered-down pop. That’s not to say Thorn is a country singer. Think of him more as a bluesy Lyle Lovett or a

slightly twangy John Hiatt. He returns to Fifth Third Ballpark this month as part of a series of live music shows held at the Stadium Club. Grand Rapids indie-folk band Big Dudee Roo opens the show. Only 200 tickets will be sold for the concert, and parking is free. Reported by Brian Edwards
