MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE to do an in-store meet and greet at Vertigo Records

O 42 | REVUEWM.COM | APRIL 2011

N APRIL 16, independent record stores across the country will cel- ebrate Record Store Day. Though this “holiday” is young, it remains the best way to support the best

places to find music: local, independent record stores. “If you look at a lot of national press

on music sales in record stores, it’s always negative. However, the secret here is that within the independent sector of record stores, a lot of us are thriving,” said Chris Brown, vice president of New England’s Bull Moose Records. Brown is also responsible for first pro-

posing the idea of Record Store Day. “You know how an idea pops out of

your fingers while you’re typing? It was that moment,” says Brown. Using connections with coalitions of

independent record stores across the coun- try, Brown proposed having a specific day to celebrate via special sales, increased stock and

festivities such as concerts and refreshments. The idea reached Michael Kurtz (another ac- tive member of a record store coalition), who helped with its implementation. Labels were contacted and word was spread. In 2007, the first Record Store Day was celebrated. In West Michigan, one place to stop is

Vertigo Music (129 Division, Grand Rapids). Like before, Vertigo’s celebration of Record Store Day will include live music and sales. This year, however, the store has raised the bar and booked rock band My Chemical Romance to come in for a special meet and greet between 2 and 6 p.m. “Herm [Baker, Vertigo’s owner] stock-

piles the best of the vinyl that comes in for a few months before RSD, so there are always lovely treats in the bins,” said Lydia Clowney, head of promotions and special events at Vertigo. Some of the artists who will be perform- ing include The Long Count, Shores, Boss

Mustangs, The Blue Squares, Big Dudee Roo and more. Another West Michigan store participat-

ing in Record Store Day includes Corner Record Shop, located in Grandville and Kalamazoo. The Corner Record Shop has music

available in media that some of us forgot existed, like reel-to-reel, 8-tracks, VHS and cassette tapes. But for those who prefer less-antiquated means of listening, Corner Record Shop has plenty of new and used vinyl records and CDs. “I love being able to use the knowledge

I’ve accumulated over the past 15 years and help people find what they are looking for,” said April Morris, a Kalamazoo employee and frontwoman of the band Glowfriends. Both the Grandville and Kalamazoo lo-

cations will have sales, along with an increase of stock and various festivities to make the day even more enjoyable. n
