The best unsigned bands in the uk, and how to find them!

COMPUTER AT SEA

JEWELLERS

Galen Richmond, from Portland, Oregon, crafts electronic landscapes from videogame console soundcards, handmade electronic devices and the usual blend of wonderful circuit-bending equipment used for chiptune style music. 8-bit sounds abound as ZX Spectrum crashes and soaring phaser sounds leave an open field for Galen’s whimsical vocals. The six tracker Palace of The Lightbulbs is available now, including on vinyl if you would like! Check out the bandcamp page (address below) for listening and purchasing options. Anyone who tags their music as ‘Zelda’ is alright by us. http://computeratsea.com

Newport residents Jewellers co-opt the ambient electronic sounds of the past two decades and distil them into repetitious, adorably melodic tunes that bear a resemblance to their kaleidoscopic cover art. Sample- heavy, with some vocal looping, this rhythmic but generally minimal soundscape proves simplicity to be a key to engaging electronic music. Each track from the two Gareths, Leaman and Young, on their album Sleep Education builds layers without ever getting too indistinct, messy or weighty. They continue to keep dynamics in mind, though there never seems to be one overdub fighting with another. There’s more than enough room to breathe. Check it out on http://soundcloud.com/Jewellers or go download it from Bandcamp below. I have. http://jewellers.bandcamp.com

B>E>A>K

Cheekily having the same name as Portishead man’s project (except that’s set out as Beak>), this stuff is far more listenable, joyful and, frankly, enjoyable. This Sunderland quintet use that unavoidably ace tappy, Morse code guitar but filter in some excellent parping horns which give it a Faraquet vs. The Polyphonic Spree feel (even though the Spree didn’t use horns). When the chaos overtakes, it’s more like a major key skronk by James Chance, which is obviously genius. You can listen to their two track single The Red Edition, which is the first in a series of releases entitled The Life Of Birds. These guys are potentially one of our favourite bands. We’ll see how these releases evolve over time. Listen and download here: http://beaktastic.bandcamp.com
