Local Elections
Elections for District, Parish and Town Councils across the country have been called and will take place on Thursday 5 May, which is also the date of the Alterna- tive Vote (AV) parliamentary referendum. The candidates for election are yet to be determined and anyone in Mid Sussex is eligible for nomination as a District candidate. The nom- ination period for all candi- dates starts on Wednesday 16 March 2011 and closes at noon on Monday 4 April 2011. A helpful brochure giving details on the role of District Councillors has been published online, to assist anyone considering standing for election. The brochure, called Being a Councillor, gives details on the wide-ranging role of a Councillor and their main areas of responsibility, in- cluding ward representa- tion, decision-making and community leadership. Parish and Town Councils will also be holding elec- tions; residents are encour- aged to contact their local
clerk if they are interested in getting involved at Town or Parish level. All registered electors in the District will be eligible to vote in the local elections. European Union citizens, however, will not be able to vote in the referendum. Tom Clark, the Electoral Registra- tion Offi cer for Mid Sussex says, “Now is the time for residents to check that they are registered. Everyone who has moved house re- cently and has not complet- ed a voter registration form should contact our Electoral Services Department.” Phillippa Saray from the Electoral Commission, the independent elections watchdog, adds: “Residents may also be planning to be away on 5 May, given the extra Bank Holiday for the Royal Wedding, so it’s worth applying now to vote by post or proxy if that will suit your plans. You can print off the forms from www.midsussex.
gov.uk/elections. It just takes a few minutes, and then you are all set for 5 May.” The Being a Councillor bro- chure is available to down- load from the Council’s

The Sussex Harmonisers
The Sussex Harmonisers, the county’s premier male Barbershop chorus, is now about 70 members strong. From small beginnings in 1997 and through a number of different incarnations, we are now “based” in Burgess
Hill, where we rehearse at St Paul’s Catholic College, at 7.30 every Tuesday evening. A recent appearance on
the London stage as part of the Brandenburg Spring Choral Festival was the highlight of 2011so far. Chairman Mick Bowles said “it was a great experience to be asked to introduce the Barbershop format to this Festival, along with a ladies barbershop chorus and a top male quartet. It was also the perfect opportunity for our new Musical Director, Zoe Peate, to start to conduct us in performance. Although not unusual in the barber- shop world, this is the fi rst time the Harmonisers have had a lady as their MD and we are delighted that she has taken us on!” But not content with one
night on the London stage, shared with others, our next public appearance will be for 2 nights at the Brighton Festival Fringe on May 7th and 8th when we have the whole show to ourselves! One unusual feature of the
barbershop style of singing is that we perform unaided (or unhampered!) by any form of instrumental accompani- ment. We are just guys sing- ing tuneful melodies with spine-tingling harmonies and toe-tapping rhythms. We take our singing seriously and constantly strive to im- prove and we fi nd the more we do, the more enjoyment we have. Our rehearsals are punctuated by laughter, friendly banter, leg pulling and a lot of socialising! Men who fancy singing
barbershop style and having some fun along the way are always welcome, especially so if they might have a Bari- tone or Tenor voice, but it’s not necessary to be able to read music. Turn up at a re- hearsal or ring Brian Beglin on 01273 553102.
