56 SUSSEX LIVING FOR MID SUSSEX April 2011
Good Night, and Good Luck
T
here is a new breed of mother out there, based on the Chinese model of the Tiger Mum. Failure is not an option. Her children have to jump higher, run faster, play better and score higher than all the rest. Aside from the fact that these children will end up spending a fortune on therapy, it doesn’t actually do much for Sisterhood either, as a sense of latent competitiveness seeps into even the most casual of school run relationships. And what happens to these women when the children are ‘done’? Well, although a relatively new social phenomenon, it appears that they embark on a midlife crisis of equally extreme and competitive proportions. No longer is it suffi cient to get a haircut and a sports car, oh no. This breed means business, as I found out last week at Alpha Mum’s Excuse Me, My Life Is Waiting leaving do. “Basically, I gave up work to ‘do’ children and quite
frankly, now they’re ‘done’ I feel it’s my time,” announced Alpha Mum. We had been summoned to Alpha Hall to bid farewell to Mrs A, who has decided to embark on her own Eat Pray Love voyage of self-discovery. Having decluttered her life of everything she no longer considers necessary, including her husband, Alpha Mum has taken a (much) younger lover, bought a Harley, dyed her hair red and dumped the Max Mara for a wardrobe of Superdry and Belstaff. Horrifi ed or envious? Having had the wonderful privilege of writing this column for the past 18 months, I too have decided it’s time to move on. As 21st century women we have been raised to compete and focus on achievements, but these are often gained at the expense of relationships. So, I leave you with a plea to ease up, stop putting so much pressure on yourselves, to laugh more, support each other more and enjoy each other more. Good Night, and Good Luck.
