Pelham High Recognizes Winter Athletes, Stephen Spirou Honored

by Marc Ayotte The friendly confines of the ‘Snake Pit’ was the site for the PHS Winter Sports Awards night held on Tuesday, March 22. Unlike other awards ceremonies where only the individuals who receive awards would parade to the podium, the Pelham format was different. As each coach from their respective sport addressed family and friends in the bleachers, members of that team stood up on the stage with the coach(es)—a nice opportunity for them to be seen by those who came to witness their accomplishments. In his opening remarks, Athletic Director

Todd Kress thanked the boosters and parents of the student-athletes for their roles during the season. He also acknowledged both individual and team accomplishments during the season, as well as spoke about off-season dedication. Team highlights that Kress addressed were the indoor

track team, who sent an impressive 22 athletes to compete in the indoor state meet; the spirit-dance team for performing at the TD Garden at a Boston Celtics game a few weeks ago; the Pelham- Windham hockey team, which made it all the way to the state semifinals in their first year as a varsity program; and the boys’ basketball team, which made it into the semifinals this year and have made it to Durham (where the tournament is held) five of the last eight seasons. On the individual front, the first-year PHS athletic director recognized three Python wrestlers—Josh Medeiros and Warren Greenhalgh for each winning state championships in their respective weight classes, along with Rich Sullivan, who had a second-place finish in the state meet. Derek DeFranzo of the boys’ basketball team received honorable mention for the All-State Award and Stephen Spirou was

Board Chairmen Chosen by Barbara O’Brien

One of the first pieces of business to be conducted following the annual town and school district elections is the selection of those who will chair the two boards. This task was accomplished in Windham during each board’s first meeting, both of which were held on March 14. Elections were held on March 8. The evening began with Town Clerk Nicole Merrill swearing in the two new members of the Windham Board of Selectmen— Kathleen DiFruscia and Phil LoChiatto. DiFruscia and LoChiatto assumed the seats previously held by Charles McMahon and Galen Stearns. McMahon lost his bid for re-election, while Stearns chose not to see another term on the board. A little levity was added to the meeting when Selectman Roger Hohenberger asked DiFruscia to vacate the chair in which she was seated at the table. “I love my seat,” Hohenberger said. “You can’t have it!” DiFruscia graciously moved to the other end of the table, with a genuine smile on her face. Hohenberger explained that he had been sitting in that very same seat, two chairs to the left of the chairman, for the many years he had served the town as a selectman.

Selectman Ross McLeod then nominated Hohenberger as

chairman. Hohenberger, however, declined the nomination, saying that he had served in that capacity in the past not only as

enjoyed a night of fun at Pinball Wizard in Pelham, where they had a great night of pizza and games. These boys have been in Scouts together since they were Tiger Cubs in 2006, and they decided that for an end-of-year party they wanted to do something extra fun together as their last meeting. What better way than a night at Pinball Wizard! We would like to thank

everyone at Pinball Wizard for a great night!

a selectman, but also as chairman of the School Board, Planning Board and Capital Improvement Committee (CIP). “I also appreciate NOT being chairman,” Hohenberger stated, adding that he feels he has more latitude in participating in discussions when he is not the board chairman. Subsequently, Hohenberger nominated McLeod as chairman. McLeod accepted the nomination and was elected to that position unanimously. “I am flattered and honored,” he said. Nominated and unanimously elected as vice chairman of the Board of Selectmen was Bruce Breton. Breton said this is the sixth time that he has served as vice chairman. On the school board side of the ledger, there was a role

reversal. Ed Gallagher was nominated and unanimously elected as Chairman. This past year, Gallagher served as vice chairman to the School Board. Bruce Anderson, who was the previous chairman, got the nod as School Board Vice Chairman for the next 12 months. Newly elected School Board members Stephanie Wimmer and Michelle Farrell were sworn in to three-year terms. This is Wimmer’s first term on the School Board. Farrell was appointed last year to fill the seat that was vacated by Mike Hatem. This is the first time she has been elected to the job by a public referendum.

to train virtually year-round, Kress indicated that “it’s what happens between now and next November that will make us better teams and better individuals [players].” In his address, Kress cited the boys’ lacrosse team (collectively) and Spirou as examples of spending their off-seasons by practicing and conditioning in an attempt to better themselves. In his attempt to pump up the athletes for next fall, Kress added that “off-season dedication leads to in-season success.” In closing, the Python Athletic Director recognized the efforts and commitment of all the coaches, saying that “their dedication and passion is unmatched.”

Altogether, there were 28 awards presented, including a ‘Comeback Athlete Award’ presented by PHS athletic trainer Rolinda Mitchell, which went to Amanda Blake. The head coaches were given the leniency of naming the awards in a manner in which they felt best identified that player’s role on the team. Accordingly, the traditional awards format reflecting most improved player, coach’s player, and MVP was not in play. However, two coaches in particular, Matt Regan (boys’ basketball) and Bob Riddinger (boys’ wrestling), did stick to their conventional guns and handed out MVP awards to Stephen Spirou and Warren Greenhalgh, respectively.
