For Over 63 Years, Messina’s Has Meant Quality Products with Caring Service
When Phil Messina’s Uncle Joe opened Messina’s Flooring and Carpeting in Lawrence, MA, 50 years ago, customers were most interested in how long their flooring would last. “Today people are more interested
in how beautiful the floor covering is than how long it will last,” said Messina, president and co-owner of Messina’s Flooring and Carpeting, now at 7 Industrial Way, Salem. “People today want durability and fashion.” Messina’s showroom and warehouse, just minutes from Exit 2 off I-93, offer a huge selection of the latest and best quality carpeting, vinyl, tile, hardwood, laminates, and window treatment by Hunter Douglas. “Many of our customers are women,”
he said. “Women spend a lot of time accessorizing their own outfits and they are spending that same time on their home. Today, the number-one reason for purchasing floor covering is to dress up a room and make it look better.” A venerable family company like Messina is proud of its reputation for service and value. “We give the customer value, we offer a great product to make their home beautiful and a place they can be proud of. But we also pride ourselves on getting to know you and helping you make your home beautiful. We want you to be pleased now and down the road.” Messina’s makes three promises to its customers: to sell only quality material, to offer the best installation, and to give the best advice. “We are most proud of the advice we
give our customers,” Messina said. “The difference between us and the national companies is that they push product. They sell what they show. We still give professional advice based on years of experience in helping people have a beautiful home.”
Although most people know Messina’s as the store where they buy floor covering for their home, the company is also well known for its commercial work. “We also do installations in municipalities, schools, hospitals,

apartments,” Messina said. “We work with home builders and do entire developments or office buildings. We offer flexibility of scheduling. In lots of hospitals or doctor’s offices, we work at night. We work around people’s schedules.”
Phil Messina has two partners and co-
owners—his wife, Andrea, who heads the office staff, purchasing, and accounting departments, and his best friend since seventh grade, David Smolag, who is general manager. “Four years ago, David joined us to help us maintain our high level of service,” Phil said. The Salem salesroom has 10 highly trained sales people and office staff and
dozens of installers. Messina’s invites customers to its beautiful Salem showroom, but they also offer free in-home consulting. “With today’s busy lifestyle, people appreciate the convenience of shopping at home. We have a van filled with samples and you get the same quality advice that you would get in our showroom,” Messina said. Veteran floor decorating expert Jerri Roda is the in-home salesperson who will help you make your choice. She will also measure your floors or windows right on the spot. Messina’s promises competitive
pricing. Messina’s showroom is a Shaw Floor Center, meaning that the local company is a Shaw’s preferred dealer, which allows them to buy directly from the manufacturer. Factory-direct means lower prices for Messina’s customers. Their Website at
www.messinas-
flooring.com lists sales on selected products. It also offers coupons to obtain discounts on sales over $500. Messina’s showroom is open Monday
to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. Open evenings by appointment.
