Collins Dentistry for Children Collins Dentistry for Children

At Collins Dentistry for Children we believe in prevention and early treatment. The baby (primary) teeth form the foundation for the development of the permanent teeth and jaw, so any treatment rendered to primary teeth helps to ensure a better chance for a healthy and disease-free mouth.

On any given day if you drive by the intersection of Winn Avenue and Lowell Road in Hudson, you’ll notice a hub of activity at Tokyo’s Joe’s Studios of Self Defense. Children and adults alike are seen excitedly moving toward class, dressed in white or colorful martial arts attire. Instead of going home after school to play video games or chat online, the Tokyo Joe’s kids show up to learn “Statue of the Crane” or maybe a new jiujutsu self-defense technique. Instead of spending a night on the couch in front of the TV, the Tokyo Joe’s adult kickboxers congregate at the studio, eager for another high-octane workout. The karate school is owned by Hudson residents Matt and Erika Babine. Sensei (means “teacher”) Matt Babine is the driving force behind his karate’s school’s astounding success in Hudson. People meeting him for the first time are immediately taken by his broad smile, his energy, dynamism, and warmth. He has been studying and teaching martial arts for over 20 years. He holds black belts in both Kempo Karate and Tae Kwon Do. He has competed in men’s heavyweight sparring on both a national and international level, and is the winner of numerous national and world championships. Erika handles the business and marketing end of the operation. Their daughter Karina, 13, has been studying martial arts since she was 4 years old and has won national championships in black belt girls’ fighting. Sensei Matt Babine has a passion for martial arts and especially for teaching and motivating young people. He believes that the study of martial arts will help his students transform their minds, bodies, and spirits. His students seem to agree. Tokyo Joe’s Studios of Self Defense offers classes for all ages. The Little Ninjas and Advanced Little Ninjas classes (ages 3 to 5) are specifically geared toward preschool-age children. Little Ninjas serves as an excellent introduction for young children to the martial arts, but also teaches them many valuable skills as they prepare for Kindergarten and beyond. The tiny students learn crucial listening skills and develop their focus,

A friendly haven dedicated

to children’s health has opened its doors at 76 Allds Street in Nashua. Collins Dentistry for Children, specializing in pediatric dentistry, arrived in Nashua in October 2010. Pediatric dentist Dr. Nilfa Collins received her D.M.D. from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and completed specialty training in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Dental School (UMDNJ-NJDS). “We are the new kids on the

block,” said Dr. Collins, who also maintains a successful pediatric dental office in Pelham. She strives to create a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere where children will feel safe and unafraid to receive dental treatment. For example, the practice offers a cozy, kid-approved waiting room complete with books, toys, games, and favorite TV shows available on a large, flat- screen TV. Dr. Collins uses gentle language during dental procedures to ease little ones’ anxieties. A common statement such as, “We are now going to put fluoride on your teeth” becomes “We are now going to brush vitamins on your teeth.” Patients as young as one year of age are welcome to enjoy their first dental experience at Collins Dentistry for Children. An infant care room is available, and parents may accompany their children in the dental chair if a child is especially apprehensive. A first visit may consist only of counting the teeth, allowing the child to relax and become familiar with the sights and sounds of the dental office. Dr. Collins’ gentle disposition and respectful treatment of patients has gained her a loyal following. Some patients who visited Dr. Collins as small children are now entering college. Through gentleness, patience, and a little tried-and-true psychology, Dr. Collins and her friendly staff gain the trust of young patients, ensuring a lifetime of excellent routine dental care. To assist parents with caring for children’s teeth in between dental visits, Dr. Collins and her staff encourage parents to follow the

recommendations of the American Dental Association (ADA) and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), and reduce or eliminate certain foods and drinks that may lead to tooth decay. Additionally, Collins Dentistry for Children is a “green” practice striving to reduce paper. Parents may visit the company Website for information, to download initial registration forms, and make appointments. Collins Dentistry for Children enjoys being part of the Nashua community, and will soon be scheduling fun family activities. For example, mascots for area sports teams have appeared in Pelham on Patient Appreciation Days, and they find their way to Nashua in the near future. DNA Life Link will be visiting the office, taking children’s “tooth prints” for ID purposes. Dr. Collins is planning more adventures, and will list events on the Website. Dr. Collins and the staff also participate in educational presentations at schools, day care centers, health fairs, and parenting group meetings. Recently, Dr. Goli joined the staff at Collins Dentistry for Children. Dr. Goli is a graduate of Tufts University. Dr. Collins and her staff are delighted to welcome him as part of this growing team of dental professionals. self-discipline, and self-control. Because their attention span is still somewhat limited, the class is fast-paced and extremely energetic. The Junior Beginner’s class (ages 6 and up) features exciting karate training for beginning karate students. Children develop confidence, self- discipline, respect, focus, and good fitness habits. Students learn the importance of valuing their minds and bodies, develop valuable self-defense skills, and learn to deal with bullies peacefully. The Junior Advanced and Super Advanced classes instruct older children in more advanced techniques, weapons, and sparring. These older students learn leadership skills as they are encouraged to mentor younger students. Demo Team students develop self-confidence as they perform in front of audiences. The adult/teen karate class has become very popular. Tokyo Joe’s has also recently begun offering tumbling classes. One of the fastest growing classes is the adult

Thai Kickboxing class. Many of the kickboxers are moms and dads whose children are karate students themselves. Thai Kickboxing combines instruction in martial-arts-based self-defense with

a body-transforming, extremely high-energy workout. As the class begins, fast-paced hip-hop and rock music pulses loudly, and students strap on their gloves as they line up in front of the kick bags. Babine comments, “The terrific thing about this class is that people at every different fitness level can participate. We have people who have never worked out before in their lives, as well as aerobics instructors and bodybuilders. No matter what shape you’re in at the
