and pursue opportunities today LOOK BEYOND
TOMORROW
he Australia-China relationship is today stronger and more broadly based than ever before. From the foundations of our newly established diplomatic ties in 1972, this partnership has grown to become one of Australia’s most significant. In October 2009, Australia and China concluded our first joint
statement in 38 years. This was a significant milestone, marking not just how far the partnership has come, but also signalling our ambitions for the future. We agreed to promote the long-term, steady growth of a comprehensive and cooperative bilateral relationship. The Joint Statement also committed both governments to managing any differences that arise on the basis of mutual respect and equality. This important step reflects the maturity of a relationship that is now firmly anchored in growing shared interests. Principal among these shared interests is our strong and evolving
economic relationship, which continues to have very tangible benefits for both peoples. The highly successful Australia-China CEO Roundtable in June 2010 was just one example of how the Australian government is working with business in both countries to advance ties by reducing barriers to trade and investment, and targeting emerging opportunities in sectors such as services and clean energy. Cooperation in other areas of the bilateral relationship is also rapidly
expanding. We are now collaborating closely in areas ranging from science and technology to education, sports and culture. Recognising the enhanced contribution that we can make to tackling regional and global challenges by working together, we are also deepening cooperation on issues such as disaster response, humanitarian relief, transnational crime, climate change and the G20. Building on the success of our popular national pavilion at the Shanghai
World Expo, the Australian government launched the Year of Australian Culture in China in Beijing in June 2010. This is the largest cultural program Australia has ever presented in China. Together with the Year of Chinese Culture in Australia, which I look forward to hosting from mid-2011, it will help promote greater cultural exchange and mutual understanding. I also wish to thank Australia’s Chinese community for its contribution to
our diverse and growing ties with China. Over the decades, this community and its counterpart, the Australian community in China, have played a pivotal role in fostering the strong people-to-people ties that underpin the bilateral relationship. The Australia China Business Council is to be commended for Australia China: Beyond Tomorrow, as well as for its productive efforts to promote bilateral business and trade. Going forward, I urge all of you to envisage what cooperation between our two countries could look like beyond tomorrow and to use this publication to begin actively pursuing those opportunities today.
