ModernWater scoops up specialist Cogent
Water technology group Modern Water is to buy the environmental and processmonitoring prod- ucts companyCogentEn- vironmental. Cogent specialises in
systems that provide in- formation on harmful materials. Its online and on-site portable products, OVA and PDV, are used formonitoringheavymet- als in over 20 countries. ModernWater says the
move is important for its existing water moni- toring business, Cymtox, which has been success-
fully selling water quality monitoring systems into China. It is setting up a dedicated division, MW Monitoring, to consoli- date activities in the in- strumentation andmoni- toring industry. The group’s systems are
used to monitor waste- water discharges, identify sources of heavy metal pollutioninrivers, andthe monitoring of drinking water for potential metal contamination. There are alsomarkets
in the mining and metal processing industries.
Biotech study groups share £1mfunding pot
Ten feasibility studies into howindustrialbiotechnol- ogy can be competitively applied to the production of high value chemicals and polymers have been awarded
government
funds totalling£1million. The funding follows the
end of the first part of a funding competition – Manufacturing High Value Chemicals through IndustrialBiotechnology– run by the Technology StrategyBoard.Eachcom- pany will receive between £40,000and£120,000to carry out the studies. Industrial biotechnol-
ogy offers the potential to develop new, efficient and
sustainablemethodsofob- taining a significant pro- portion of our energy, chemical and material needs. Agricultural feed- stocks, novel biocatalysts and bioreactor technolo- gies could replace existing petrochemical-derived products such as lubri- cants andplasticsor create active pharmaceutical in- gredients through novel bio-transformations. InApril theTechnology
Strategy Board will an- nounce the results of the second part of its funding competition, which will see up to £1.5 million in- vested in collaborative R&Dprojects.
Force for change: Swedenís aviation physiology testing site comes under UK operation
Qinetiq wins at air medical site
UK research groupQine- tiq is to to operate and maintain the world-class Flight Physiological Cen- tre onbehalf ofFörsvarets Materiel Verk (FMV), the Swedish defence organi- sation. Under the 10-year
agreement, Qinetiq will use its test and evaluation expertise to manage the facilities and ensure that they are available to the Swedish Armed Forces. But Qinetiq will also be marketing themto third- party customers, tomake more productive use of the centre. The Flight Physiologi- cal Centre is part of the
aviation training, testing and research establish- ment located at Malmen in southern Sweden. The self-contained cen-
tre comprises a dynamic flight simulator (DFS), a combined human cen- trifuge and flight simula- tor which creates the g-force effect imposed by high performance air- craft; a hypobaric decom- pression chamber and a hyperbaric high pressure “diving” chamber; and a purpose build test and survival pool which can recreate adverse weather conditions. “FMV’s ability to sup- port world-class aviation
medicine training, re- search, and test and eval- uation will be assured for the long term by the cost savings and facility man- agement skills delivered byQinetiq,” saidBrigadier General Ossi Koukkula, FMV’s director of test and evaluation. Qinetiq has previously
worked with FMV on re- search support and en- abling projects. The two organisations have also worked together to sup- port the provision of Gripen aircraft for train- ingprogrammesdelivered via theEmpireTestPilots’ School atMoDBoscombe Down, in theUK.
