Curry capital title goes to Glasgow again

Glasgow has been named Curry Capital of Britain for a record fourth time in the past 10 years. The Scottish city fought off competition from 11 others to take the title which was run during National Curry Week. Glasgow was represented in the final by Balbir’s, KoolBa, Mister Singh’s India and Mother India café. Lord provost Bob Winter said: “I am delighted the title is coming back to Glasgow where it belongs. It’s wonderful news.” Members of the public were asked to vote for their favourite Indian restau- rant and of the 66 Glasgow restau- rants to receive a nomination, these four secured the most. They went on to impress the judges with innovative dishes, first class service and ‘incred- ible fundraising’. Glasgow won the Curry Capital of Britain title in 2002, 2003 and 2006. It was runner up in 2004, 2005 and 2007. This year Bradford came second with Wolverhampton in third place.

Eating almonds might prevent diabetes

A recent research project has found that eating almonds might help treat type 2 diabetes, which accounts for 90%-95% of all cases. As well as combat- ing this debilitating condition, it could tackle cardiovascular dis- ease, a report published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition has claimed.

The study found consuming a diet rich in almonds may help improve insulin sensitivity and decrease LDL-cholesterol levels in those with prediabetes,

a condition in which people have blood glucose levels higher than normal but not high enough to be classified as diabetes.

An estimated 55 million people in Europe have been diagnosed with diabetes, and the figure is expected to rise to 66 million by 2030. There is no known way to prevent type 1 diabetes, which may be autoimmune, genetic, or environmental. It accounts for 5% of all cases. Type 2 diabe- tes most often occurs in people older than 40.
