Dear Editor

I found the last copy of Village Voice fascinating, the fact that there is such a lively debate about local businesses can only be healthy. Unfortunately correspondents seem to get hung up on the strangest issues. Far be it from me to defend Taste Tideswell, they still have a lot to learn, but it must be remembered that the lottery money flowing in to the village

generates jobs and visitors who will spend money in other businesses in the village. A business like that can never be dependent solely on villagers for it’s income, it must try and attract others, who can afford their courses.

The Co-op’s decision to sell papers seems to be strangely emotive. Nobody complains about the Co-op selling flowers because we have a florist, bread because we have a baker, meat because we have a butcher, vegetables because we have a green grocer. Equally no-one complains that they stay open when most of the other shops have closed, we seem to appreciate that convenience. Why then should we get upset about them selling newspapers in competition with a shop which is also a general store selling much of what they sell.

When Peak District Dairy Farm Shop and Café opened there weren’t complaints, as far as I recollect, from Tindalls about the bread or the Vanilla Kitchen about the Café; there seems to be general delight that the new shop in Cherry Tree Square has opened and the Post Office now sells some vegetables and even cups of coffee.

Every shop in the village seems to be selling lunch time sandwiches and I’ve heard no complaints about the cheap eggs in the Fish and Chip Shop.

I’m sure we can all think of lots of examples where our entrepreneurial shop keepers have improved the amenities in our village. Let’s leave them to it!
