Youth High school athletes get free physicals


Gilbert Hospital’s 4th Annual TOPS Event from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sat., April 30 offers SanTan Sun area athletes in eighth through 12th grades free sports physicals at Mesquite High School in Gilbert. Appointments are required. TOPS, or Teams of Physicians for Students, gives high school students a comprehensive athletic screening with an emphasis on detecting cardiac conditions that can cause sudden cardiac death. Routine physicals are unable to detect those conditions without an EKG and an ECHO. If required, they are provided free of charge at the TOPS event.

Youth music lessons begin soon


SanTan Sun youths ages 4 to 14 are invited to take music lessons offered by West Chandler Aquatics Center and the Phoenix Conservatory of Music on Tuesdays starting March 29.


Classes offered include Growing Young Musicians for ages 4 to 7, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.; Beginning Youth Guitar for ages 8 to 14, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.; or Beginning Piano for ages 8 to 14, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. For Beginning Youth Guitar and Beginning Piano, students are required to provide their own guitars or keyboards. Space is limited.

Festival brings jazz melodies to Highland High


Highland High School of Gilbert host its annual Jazz Festival Thu., March 31 through Sat., April 2.


The event features Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Jeff Coffi n and his band “The Mu’tet” and ASU’s concert jazz band on Friday, and Grammy Award-winning trumpet player Bobby Shew, Highland High’s All-Star combo and the ASU concert jazz band on Saturday.

Enroll in track, field clinic now


The Gilbert Track and Field Clinic for boys and girls ages 7 to 14 runs from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays and Fridays, March 28 through April 15 at Greenfi eld Junior High School in Gilbert. The cost is $45.


The clinic is a recreational program designed to help prepare boys and girls for the annual Hershey’s Track and Field Meet. Participants learn fundamentals of track and fi eld events in a fun atmosphere. The program includes instruction in sprints, middle distance, relay, standing long jump and softball throw. The Hershey’s Track and Field Meet will be held at 9 a.m. Sat., April 30 at Williams Field High School in Gilbert. Greenfi eld Junior High is located at 101 S. Greenfi eld Rd. in Gilbert.
