Youth Legacy Traditional opens new school


The school combines high-quality education with health and fi tness for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Fitness training will be staffed by certifi ed trainers in concert with Velocity Sports Performance.


The new facility will include a gym, library, computer lab and 28 classrooms. Approximately 750 students are expected to attend.


Legacy Traditional School, one of the largest charter schools in the state, is now in its fourth year of operations, with campuses in Maricopa, Casa Grande and Queen Creek, with new campuses opening for the 2011-12 school year in Avondale and Marana/Oro Valley.

Swing for student ambassadors


The People to People Ambassador golf outing and ball drop at Longbow Golf Club, organized by Chandler resident and Basha Elementary student Baily Strauss, raises funds for People to People Ambassador program, which provides educational and goodwill opportunities across the globe.


Golf begins at 3 p.m. on Sun., April 3, Parent-Junior Scramble and Two Person Scramble divisions available. The Benefi t Golf Ball Drop is open through April 3. Numbered golf balls are dropped from a helicopter and the golf ball that ends up in the hole or closest to the pin wins $500 in cash. The cost to enter the ball drop is $10 per golf ball and can be purchased online at www.longbowgolf.com/ambassador. Both events will offset tuition for Baily, an Arizona Student Ambassador, and 39 other ambassadors who will travel to Australia this June to work with a marine biologist while experiencing the Great Barrier Reef, learning ancient traditions of the Aboriginal people, visiting world heritage sites and working on other group service projects.

Young artists,


Athlos Academy, a new Legacy Traditional School, will open its doors in authors sought for contest Southern Chandler this fall.


Chandler youth ages 13 to 18 years of age are invited to participate in the second annual Young Artists & Authors Showcase sponsored by the City of Chandler’s Sister City affi liate, the Chandler Irish Cultural Council (CICC) representing the “twinning” between Chandler and Tullamore, Ireland. Entries must be submitted by April 8 with the $5 entry fee.


The Showcase theme for 2011 is “Shaping Your Community for a Greener Future” which challenges young artists to answer the question, “What makes you, you?”


Young artists who are residents of Chandler are asked to show how cultures and experiences have impacted their ideas and perspectives of the world. In addition, student essayists and poets are encouraged to creatively express the theme.


Art entries must be no larger than 24 by 30 inches. Watercolor, oil, acrylic, pastel, pen and ink, charcoal, photography, two-dimensional mixed media and computer-generated art are all acceptable media. Essays are not to exceed 750 words, and poetry is not to exceed 40 lines. All entries must be typed in English. A panel of judges will evaluate entries on the basis of theme interpretation, composition, scholarship and originality. The top entries will be on display at the Vision Gallery in downtown Chandler on Fri., April 15. One winning essay and one winning poem will be submitted to Sister Cities International in Washington, D.C. for judging with other entries from the United States. The fi rst place U.S. personal essay and poem each will receive $1,000 and will be published on the Sister Cities International website, www.sister-cities.org.
