Past blast benefits disabled
Dig out your poodle skirts and bobby socks or rent them for the sixth annual Sock Hop hosted by the City of Chandler and the Recreation and Athletics (RAD) for the Disabled organization from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Fri., April 22 at the Chandler Community Center.
The event features a live deejay from Limelight Entertainment and root beer floats.
RAD is a nonprofit organization founded by parents of the disabled and other concerned citizens, helping to generate funding for any disabled person to participate in recreational or athletic activities he or she otherwise could not afford.

Neighbors Lions collect canned food
SanTan Sun area residents are asked to donate nonperishable canned food items during the 2011 Little League season at the Snack Shack at Snedigar Sportsplex in Chandler. Initial collection efforts begin on Sat., March 26, opening day for the season.
The collection is coordinated by the Ojo Rojo Lions Club of Chandler. All food will be donated to the Chandler Christian Community Center. Snedigar Sportsplex is located at 4500 S. Basha Rd. in Southern Chandler. For more information, visit

Fundraiser helps local student with cancer
The Renan Curtis Keesler Benefit Dinner and Silent Auction runs from 4 to 9 p.m. Fri., April 8 at Chandler Traditional Academy’s Freedom Campus in Gilbert.
The “Picnic in the Park” carnival-style benefit event is being held to raise leukemia awareness and funds to pay for Renan Curtis Keesler’s chemotherapy treatments, medical bills and Road to Remission expenses. The event will feature game booths with prizes, concessions, bouncers, an arcade, photographers, silent auction, pony rides, petting zoo and more. Pulled pork sandwiches, hamburgers and hot dogs with chips and soda or water will be available. Prepaid attendance is requested.
Renan is an 11-year-old student who has been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He recently underwent his fourth chemotherapy treatment. All funds raised by the event will be deposited into Renan’s contribution account under the name “Renan Curtis Keesler” at Bank of America.
