City sponsors free landscape programs


City of Chandler utility customers can learn about irrigation and landscaping at free classes available through the City.


The courses, taught at the Chandler Senior Center from 6 to 8:45 p.m., include Chandler “Smart” Landscaping, a three-part series about the basics of desert landscaping design, Tuesdays March 22 and 29 and April 5; Pruning and Maintaining Your Landscape, Tue., March 15; Basic Yard Makeovers, Tue., April 12; and Water Smart Workshops, a three-part series including Drip Irrigation System Installation on Thu., April 21, Yard Watering on Thu., April 28 and Irrigation System Maintenance on Thu., May 5.

11 Only two homebuyers workshops left


April 9 and May 7 are the last two day-long homebuyer education classes available through a program sponsored by the City of Chandler and the Newtown Community Development Corporation.


The First Time Homebuyer’s Program is held 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both dates at the Chandler Senior Center. Refreshments and lunch are included. Participants learn how to get the best loan, avoid predatory lenders, negotiate the sales price, budget for a home purchase and homeowner’s insurance. The classes are prerequisites for many local homebuyer assistance programs including Chandler’s First Time Homebuyer’s Program. To qualify for the program, buyers cannot have owned a home in the last three years, and a family of four cannot make more than $80,000. The program helps arrange fi nancing and offers down payment assistance, credit repair, homebuyer education and ongoing support after the purchase. The Chandler Senior Center is located at 202 E. Time running out for free tax prep help


Through April 9, low- and moderate-income residents can get assistance in claiming their refunds and up to $5,600 in Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC) through the City of Chandler’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites, offering free tax preparation services.


A VITA site at the First Credit Union located at 25 S. Arizona Pl. offers free walk-in tax preparation services from 5 to 8 p.m. on Mondays and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays.


Tax assistance is also available on a walk-in basis from noon to 8 p.m. every Thursday at a VITA site located at the Community Services of Arizona (CSA) offi ce, 650 N. Arizona Ave. Appointments are available between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at CSA Monday through Thursday by calling 480-963-4321, ext. 230. A third VITA site at the Chandler Care Center, 777 E. Galveston St., assists taxpayers between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. every Saturday on a walk-in basis. Those seeking tax assistance should bring all


required tax documents with them, including W-2 forms, photo identifi cation, Social Security cards for themselves and all dependents, Form 1099 if applicable and a copy of last year’s tax return and information for all deductions and credits.
