The Word Around Town... Letters to our Editor

Thank You from Margaret Crisler

Election Day was exhilarating and I am delighted that you chose to elect me to the Planning Board. Having spent the better part of a decade serving on this Board, it is like coming home. I am actually looking forward to the hard work and diligence required to be effective in planning the future of Windham. Thank you, voters of Windham, for your confidence in me. I particularly want to thank the people who supported me, by writing letters to the newspapers, holding my sign on Election Day, and hosting my sign in their front yards. And, above all, calling their friends and neighbors and asking them to vote for me. I truly appreciate your help and will work hard to live up to your expectations. I also want to thank the people who helped me out on Election

Day, by bringing me coffee and food, loaning me a very warm pair of mittens (with handwarmers!), and just generally encouraging me.

Margaret McKee Crisler - Windham Michelle Farrell Thanks You

Thank you for re-electing me and giving me the honor to serve our community on the Windham School Board. I am always inspired by the amount of people that are dedicated to our town. I truly want to thank all of you for taking the time to understand the information, becoming involved in the process, and working tirelessly for the good of our community. Thank you to the many people that volunteered their time and effort in our campaign, it is a privilege to work with you. I am truly grateful to live in such a wonderful community. Congratulations to Stephanie Wimmer! The Windham citizens are

very fortunate to have such an outstanding person committed to our schools and our children. My best wishes to Dick Forde, Richard Horrigan, and Joel Dube,

my running mates, thank you for your dedication to the Town of Windham. Thank you to the Windham residents for supporting our schools and passing the Warrant Articles and the Budget. Your commitment to education is honorable. As a community, I believe we can meet the economic challenges and bring forth excellent educational opportunities for the students and for the Windham community as a whole.

Michelle Farrell - Windham Thank You

I am deeply grateful to each and every Windham citizen who placed their trust in me in electing me to the Board of Selectmen. Together, we can move forward with optimism and assurance that our town will continue to be a special place to live and raise our families. I am especially grateful to my family, especially my husband, and the many people throughout Windham who encouraged and supported me during my campaign.

Kathleen Sullivan DiFruscia - Windham CACR 6 – The Fiscal Responsibility Act

Over the past four years, New Hampshire has seen an unprecedented increase in taxes and fees. Introduced this year was a solution to the problem of midnight tax increases that have so infuriated us and which have robbed the people of input. People have been asking, where is the fiscal reform they voted for? It begins right now with the introduction of CACR 6 (Ulery (R-Hudson) in the House next week. The Constitutional Amendment simply requires that your elected Representative take the time, expend the energy, and vote on the hard questions they were elected to vote upon. When CACR 6 becomes law, no longer will Representatives and Senators be able to create a new tax in the dead of night, as has happened in the past. It will require a 3/5 majority of the House and the Senate to agree on each new tax upon the people.

When the amendment becomes part of the Constitution, then you and I will be able to see each and every new tax in the full light of day. Hearings will be held and the effect of each new increase will be openly and fully discussed. The flexibility to foist a hidden tax under the cover of a backroom deal will be severely restricted. We deserve more and better than the campground tax, a tax that failed in committee, but was thrust upon the people in literally the dead of night.

Already, some have come out saying that the change would “limit fiscal flexibility.” Fiscal flexibility, indeed! Flexibility to raise taxes is what is meant! If you support a slower growth of government, a smaller, leaner state government, and more local control of spending, then this amendment is needed.

Yes, this bill will make it difficult, but that is what the legislators are paid the big money to do—actually make hard fiscal decisions. Yes, the amendment will lead to more open government. Yes, the amendment will slow the growth of government. Yes, the amendment will make the state more responsive to the people of New Hampshire. Call your Representative today and tell

them you favor smaller government, open government, and an end to midnight tax deals. Tell your Representative to support CACR 6 next week.

Representative Jordan Ulery, Hillsborough-27 - Hudson

Volunteers Needed for Strawberry Festival

April showers bring May flowers, and those

May flowers mean strawberry season is not far behind. Even before the rains of April arrive, the Friends of the Library of Windham (FLOW) are actively planning this June’s Strawberry Festival and Book Fair. This year, the Festival is scheduled for Saturday, June 4, at Windham High School. The Strawberry Festival and Book Fair is

Windham’s largest community event, offering citizens an opportunity to come together to enjoy music and entertainment, play games, purchase books, and of course, partake in our infamous strawberry shortcake! This annual community event would not be possible without the time and talents of the people of Windham. FLOW needs volunteers to help on numerous fronts, including baking biscuits, cutting strawberries, painting kids’ faces, directing traffic (orange vest included), and generally making it a fun day. Each year, hundreds of individuals from our community make the Strawberry Festival possible for the thousands that attend the event. Volunteers can help in advance of the Festival or on the day of the Festival. No contribution of your time or talent is too small, and we have roles for people of all ages! For students, volunteering is a great way to complete your community service hour requirements. The Festival is the primary fundraising event for the Nesmith

Library, helping to support the many educational and cultural programs the library offers. So if you’ve ever taken advantage of all the wonderful things our town library offers you or your family, consider giving back by volunteering at the Festival this year. Thank You for Your Input

I want to thank our Windham school administration, guidance counselors, teachers, and School Board members who took the time last week to meet with parents of second graders and get their input on plans for next year’s third grade. It was clear at the meeting that these professionals are working first and foremost for our children— they are not against us. All appeared open to suggestions and ideas and committed to not only offering our students the best education possible, but also to incorporating parental input into decisions. They are willing to be creative, and I believe will offer a great program to all of our third graders next year. Thank you also to the parents who participated with open minds offering creative solutions and asking insightful questions. Having educators and parents working together is always the most effective mechanism for providing quality education.
