Students Celebrate Dr. Seuss’ Birthday
submitted by Elaine Yen, Dr. H.O Smith and Library Street Schools The students of Dr. H.O. Smith and Library Street Schools recently participated in a weeklong celebration of the birthday of Dr. Seuss, which is also known as Read Across America. Students received bookmarks and pencils, completed a vacation BINGO that highlighted literacy activities, took part in a Seuss trivia contest, a book swap, and a book mark design contest; and were read to by guests from the community who graciously accepted the invitation to read.
Mrs. Donna Ross, retired teacher, read Blueberries for Sal to Mrs. Malizia’s afternoon kindergarten, and
then shared a fresh blueberry snack with the children
Contest prizewinners chose between books, Cat in the Hat stuffed animals, activity books, T-shirts, paint by number, and 3-D puzzles. Each winning bookmark is featured in the school lobby until the end of the month. Congratulations to all! Students and staff would like to express their gratitude to our guest readers (retired teachers, district employees, School Board members, a TD bank employee, and a town employee) from around the community. It is such a pleasure that so many are willing to give of their time to the students of Hudson. Thank you, Mrs. Empey, Mrs. Tagliaferro, Mrs. Chervincky, Mrs. Bisson, Mr. Sanborn, Inspector Triolo, Mr. Reardon, Mrs. Gifford, Mrs. Chandonnet, Mrs. Vallaincourt, Mrs. Ross, Mrs. Ogozaly, Mrs. Gagnon, Mr. Rodgers, Mrs. Minichello, Miss Morphis, Mrs. Dupree, Mrs. Atherton, Mrs. Warren, Mrs. Beaudette, Mrs. Kalinski, and Mrs. Wolfe.

Learning in Litchfield
by Elaine F. Cutler, Ed.D., Superintendent of Schools I would like to take this opportunity to thank
the voters of Litchfield for a positive vote on the School District budget as well as a positive vote for a 1-percent increase for non-union employees. To our employees, this vote signals your support and acknowledgment of the quality services that are provided each and every day in the Litchfield School District. Your vote of confidence is greatly appreciated. Much is uncertain regarding the state funding allocations for the 2011-2012 school year. Although the governor and the leadership in the Senate and the House of Representatives have indicated that school adequacy funding will be restored, there is also much discussion regarding increased costs to the district in the areas of retirement, catastrophic aid for special education students, and building aid. Schools and towns throughout the state will not be certain of their state allocations until the legislative session is over and a final budget is determined. As a result, Reduction in Force (RIF) letters
have been sent to selected employees. Although we have minimized the effects on the classroom, changes will be noticed by parents and community members.

bus schedules will be posted at schools and online on the district Website. Report cards for middle and high school students will be provided electronically, with arrangements being made for those families to access this information at school or receive a hard copy. Parents will be asked early in the school year if they wish to receive information electronically rather than paper copies, conserving paper, time, and administrative costs. I am confident that the community will work with the district to become more efficient and effective in its operations. The District Wellness Fair is scheduled for April 10 at Campbell High School. It should be great fun for the entire family. Please mark your calendars for this community event, which will follow the traditional Green Raider Run. The Litchfield School Board takes great pride in
our schools and welcomes your comments and suggestions. You may contact any Board member or professional staff member using the directory available at

Dental Health
Pregnancy and Oral Health
Pregnancy is a very important time for a woman to pay particular attention to her oral health. Not only can she prevent oral problems during pregnancy, but she can also help determine the dental health for her unborn child. For this reason she should be mindful of her eating habits, oral hygiene practices, and professional dental care needs. The mother's nutritional status plays an
important role to the development of the unborn child's teeth. The child's teeth begin to calcify between the third and sixth months of pregnancy. It is, therefore, essential that the mother receive adequate amounts of nutrients, since deficiencies may result in abnormal tooth formation. Especially important are vitamins A,D,C, protein, calcium, and phosphorus. Eating a well balanced diet will usually provide the necessary amounts of nutrients to nourish both mother and child. During pregnancy many women have a desire to eat between meals. Foods generally selected are rich fermentable carbohydrates (starches and sugars). This habit can be harmful to dental health and is an invitation to tooth decay. The best advice is to avoid eating between meals. For snacks it is best to select foods that contain little or no fermentable carbohydrates, but do contain nutrients to meet the needs of the mother and unborn child.
