Publishers have not only responded to consumer demand, but have also helped to shape it.


New business models enable readers to engage with content in ways which they had never previously realised were possible. In journal publishing, this started with the earliest experiments in electronic publication around 2000 and has blossomed into an industry where over 90% of the content is now published electronically.


With the advent of technologies such as the Kindle, the iPad, other tablets and ebook- compatible mobile devices, the possibilities for trade publishing have now also expanded. Publishers are able to develop their content, identify gaps in the market and grow their businesses. Taking these risks on new technologies and new business models would not be possible without the security which the IP framework offers.
