were celebrating victo- ry in Thursday’s refer- endum on extra law- making powers forthe Welsh Assembly,with 63.5 per cent of votes in favour to 36.5 per cent against. But while the result
wasdecisive,turn-out figures showed almost two-thirdsofvoters stayedawayfromthe polling stations.Turn- out across the 22 Welsh local authority areas ranged from the high of 44 per cent in Carmarthenshire to a lowof27.9 per cent in Newport, with many people complaining they had not received enough information on the issues to be ableto make up their minds. The national average turn-out was35.4 per cent. All areas but

GWENT Police is appealing for information following twohand- bagrobberies in the Caerphilly area. At approximately 2.45pm on MondayFebruary 28 a76-year-old woman waswalking along Porset RowinRudry when she was approached from behind and pushed over by aman described as white and aged between 17-25 years old. He grabbed her handbag and ranoff along the cyclepathin the direction of Lansbury link road. As aresult of her fall the victim sustained bruising to her head and hip.
The second incident occurred at
approximately 2.40pm on Tuesday March1.A71-year-old woman was walking along Bedwas Road, Caerphilly when she was approached from behind and had her handbagsnatched. The offender is described as a white man, in his early 20s and of medium build. Officers are investigating and are
appealing forinformation or wit- nesses to call 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
