Regrets, we’ve had quite afew...

UP TO £11bn could be misspent on the new‘11’ registration plate due out this week, as astudy shows around one in three buyers choose the ‘wrong’ car. The survey by CarBuyer.co.uk polled 1,000 car

owners to find out if they were happywith their purchase decision. Aworrying 304 admitted regretting their specific choice of car. Participants were then asked howthey would

have bought differentlyifthey could turn back time.Their responses were: ● The same car with adifferent engine –29

per cent ● The same car with adifferent specification

–19per cent ● Atotallydifferent car from adifferent man-

ufacturer –18per cent ● Asimilar car from adifferent manufacturer

–15per cent lThe same car in adifferent colour –11per

cent ● Adifferent car from the same manufacturer

–6per cent ● The same car in adifferent bodystyle (eg

estate not saloon) –2per cent MatWatson from CarBuyer.co.uk said: “On

average our respondents spent just over £20,000 on their newcar and so it’s worrying so many believe they didn’t make the right choice.” However,it’s not surprising so manypeople

slip up as there are 4,427 separate model deriva- tives on sale in the UK, when taking into account all the different bodystyles, engine choices and specification levels available.

Spoiled for choice –soit’snot surprising so many car buyers end up thinking they should have got ‘the other one’

Too many lights make for hard work

WITH manydrivers believ- ing thattrafficlights have become part of the conges- tion problem, the reason for those hold-ups has been revealed. The number of sets of traf-

ficlights has risen sharply in recent years, areport for the RAC Foundation has said. Numbers jumped by around 30 per cent between 2000 and 2008. Produced

by former

Whitehall transport and planning chief Irving Yass, the report also showed the number of trafficsignals equipped to give priority to buses went up from 3,801 at the beginning of 2007 to 8,425 at the end of 2008. The number of junctions in London with afull pedestri- an crossing stage –when all the lights forvehicle are at red –increased from 481 in 2000 to 783 in 2010. The report said thatthere should be areviewofsuch junctions. The report also said: ● The Department for Transport (DfT) should con- sider carrying out trials of flashing amber lights at times when there is little traffic, whichwould allow drivers to proceed with cau- tion at junctions; ● Authorities should con- sider standardising the green man at six seconds

rather than the usual 10 sec- onds; ● There should be wider

use of the “countdown” sys- tem whichshows pedestri- ans just howlong they have to cross the road; ● The DfT should allowfor trialling of cyclists turning left at ared signal if safe to do so; ● Local authorities should

see if they can remove traf- ficlights or replace them with alternatives suchas mini-roundabouts. RAC director Professor Stephen Glaister

“Trafficlights can ease your journey or be asource of frustration. “It is plain thatlights have

an important role to playbut with ever more-congested streets they need to be very finelytuned to ensure they are not doing more harm than good.” Aspokesman forthe RAC

Foundation said there were nowmore than 25,000 sets of trafficlights in the UK. He said the exact figure wasnot known because not every council had provided figures forinclusion in the report.
