Giles County strives to provide broad opportunities in its public schools for intellectual growth and personal fulfillment of every student. A strong commitment is in place for continually evaluating and updating the scope and quality of instructional programs. Additionally, the administration believes in the importance of parent and school relationships, the power of effective teaching and providing outstanding opportunities for students.
The mission of Giles County Public Schools is to achieve the mandates of the Virginia Department of Education, to continue the improvement of instruction in a positive manner and to create a welcome climate for students, parents and employees. This mission is accomplished in a team setting with participation of students, parents, employees, residents, industry and local merchants.
In order to achieve the vision, Giles County school administration embraces three concepts: Maximizing
the potential for every student’s success as an adult is the prime goal of instruction, those responsible for delivering all facets of the educational program should pursue professional growth and program development, and each individual’s potential is best achieved when the commitment to education is made by the total community.
Giles County Public Schools serve about 2,600 pupils from kindergarten through grade 12 in three elementary and middle schools, two secondary schools, a technology center and an alternative education program. The county is a member of the Southwest Virginia Governor’s School for Math, Science and Technology. The average student to teacher ratio is about 19 to one for required classes and teachers are able to work closely with students to address special, individual needs. More than 200 students graduate annually, and nearly 80 percent of those go on to pursue advanced education.
