by Sue LaRoche In a packed house, the visiting Broncos provided a huge portion of the fans, excitement, energy, and, most importantly, the 50-48 buzzer-beater victory over number-six seed Merrimack to move to the quarterfinal round of the NHIAA Division 1 playoffs. Number-11 seed Alvirne lost in the first game of the regular season to the Merrimack squad, but they thoroughly enjoyed beating the Tomahawks in their house on Tuesday, March 8, in the preliminary game of the playoffs. “The energy from the crowd was fantastic,” said first-year Head Coach Seth Garon.

Alvirne took an early 8-6 lead in the first quarter and took advantage of Merrimack’s poor shooting performance, four for 11 from the field. Alvirne lengthened the lead in the second quarter to nine points, with Caleb Donnelly and Sean Dunn providing all of the offense for the Broncos. Donnelly netted 12 points and Dunn, playing for an injured Tony Beaulieu, who rolled his ankle early in the first quarter, netted eight points, extending the Bronco lead to 26-17 at the half. Merrimack outscored the Broncos 15-8 in the third quarter, narrowing the lead to 34-32 at the end of three quarters of play. The Broncos had many scoring opportunities, but could not capitalize

on some easy baskets—shades of their loss to Merrimack earlier in the year. The highlight of the third quarter was an ally- oop pass from Donnelly to Beaulieu with 1:47 remaining in the quarter, bringing the score to 34-26. This ignited the fans, but also sparked the Tomahawks as they scored two three-point baskets to close the quarter and narrowed the Broncos’ lead to two points. “Tyler MacDonald and Jon Baldwin
played tremendous defense, and Sean Dunn didn’t miss a beat,” complimented Coach Garon. Their assignments were sharpshooters Dimitri Floras and Tyler Gendron and they did just enough to knock them off stride. “Caleb Donnelly had impeccable timing tonight,” explained Garon. Donnelly’s ability to come down the floor and hit a bucket just when you thought Merrimack had the momentum was a huge factor in the game. The fourth quarter was a battle (16 points each), with both teams going to the line a total of 22 times (15 for the Broncos and seven for Merrimack). Jimmy Tomaswick and Jon Baldwin both drew offensive fouls for the Broncos, which proved to be momentum stoppers. With 1:15 to play, Merrimack narrowed the lead to 47-45 on a three-pointer, and used their final timeout of the game. With 46.7 seconds remaining, Tyler

point as they went up 48- 45.
With
8.1 ticks of the clock remaining and the Broncos draped all
over him, Gendron hit a three-point shot to tie the score at 48. Alvirne called a timeout and ran their inbounds play to perfection. “We knew they would be all over Caleb and Jimmy Tomaswick hit Tony Beaulieu on a back- door cut, giving us the shot we wanted,” explained Garon. It was Beaulieu’s persistence, however, that won the game as he missed his first attempt, batted the rebound around, and banked the winning shot in off his own offensive rebound to give the Broncos the 50-48 victory. With no timeouts left and under one second remaining, Merrimack tossed up a wild shot and the ball fell harmlessly to the floor.

with 12 points, three rebounds, and one steal. Tony Beaulieu and Tyler Livingston had five points each, with Beaulieu adding two rebounds, one block, and one steal and Livingston grabbing seven rebounds. Jon Baldwin added four points, three rebounds, and one assist. Jimmy Tomaswick chipped in with two points, five rebounds, one blocked shot, and one steal, and Tyler MacDonald had one point and one rebound. Senior Pat Nager provided some good defense and good ball handling for the Broncos. “These kids did exactly what we needed them to do to win tonight,”
said an elated Coach Garon. “We held them to under 50 points, we connected well, we moved on the flight of the ball, and we were right in their grill all night.” Looking ahead to Friday, March 11, at 7 p.m., the Broncos will travel to the number-three seed Manchester Memorial, who they took into overtime earlier in the season. All Bronco fans are hoping for a different outcome for this game and a berth into the semifinal round (Tuesday, March 15, at 6 p.m. at UNH) with a victory.
