by Robyn Hatch Sponsored by the PTSA and held at Woodbury Middle School, Woodbury’s Winter Carnival, the school’s biggest fundraiser for the year, provides all the money for Woodbury school projects, school parties, and functions. Held last Friday night, this year’s event was a complete sellout, with a DJ, music, food, games, crafts, and multiple prize drawings. The biggest prize came from Best Buy—a raffle for a 32-inch HDTV. Best Buy and Play Ball, along with many other sponsors, were on hand demonstrating their products, making this a fun event for everyone. Missy Ribaudo led the planning for this year’s event, and did an excellent job making it run smoothly.

of African Drumming and Dance, featuring guest artists Annegret Baier and Erma Colvin with their African drums and percussion instruments. Performed annually and highly anticipated by the students, this event finalizes the third graders’ month-long study on Africa, which goes in depth on culture, geography, music, rhythm, and mask designing. With intense work with the guest artists to learn about the African instruments, Amy Moldoff put her taste of African music into the dancing show for the parents, while Justina Austin brought forward her artistic talent in developing masks, maps, and beautiful drawings. The songs performed came from South Africa, Zulu tribes, Liberia, and Ghana. When asked why the students were so excited about drumming, the general consensus from the students was because “rhythm and loudness with clapping made the music exciting and fun.” And the children’s enthusiasm definitely showed in their work.

Annegret really gets into the music
