Bandleader, Randal Arsenault, who teaches environmental science and ecology at Lethbridge College when he’s not on the road making music, is a native Newfoundlander who has traveled throughout southern Africa.

While getting a PhD in zoology in Africa, he learned the international rhythms from the culture’s music, developing a unique “Afro-Celtic- reggae” combination.

African and Celtic music are compatible, Arsenault says. In developing the sound, “I realized there are similarities between Celtic music and what I heard in the Congo.”

Dr. Zoo has six other band members, many of them from Africa. JUNO winner Youssou Seck from Senegal is on African drums and vocals. Singer Nikki Hylton is from Ghana and guitarist David Kabbashi is a native of Sudan.
