Grey Coat Issue 10: February 2011 Phoebe wins Open City award
The trip was followed up by a visit from the architect who showed the pupils how to make architectural models in a professional way. They were also briefed on a very exciting competition which allowed pupils to submit their unique creative designs and to use their professional model making skills. The competition brief was to design a housing project for 40 people.
Many of our students entered their designs and we were so proud to have a winner amongst our group!
Phoebe Davey of 8Y won an award for her response to the brief which meant she was invited to attend the awards ceremony held in the very inspiring Wellcome Trust building in Euston.
Phoebe Davey, accompanied by Miss Hernandez is presented with her prize by John Anderson, Chairman of Berkeley Homes Urban Renaissance
Last term my 8GRY Design and Technology group were extremely lucky to be taken on a trip to the channel 4 building as part of the architectural event Open City. They were greeted by an architect and by the events manager of C4 and were given an exclusive tour around this inspiring and modern building. They were then given activities and tasks to complete and present their ideas. This was all part of their Better Schools
architectural project where they are asked to redesign areas of the school.
The students were all extremely excited, well behaved and were an absolute pleasure throughout. The architects and staff at C4 were very impressed with the high level of engagement as the girls showed eagerness, intelligence and answered and asked so many interesting questions.
Miss Hernandez was very proud not only to see Phoebe win an award but to see her present her ideas and inspiration in front of other schools and prominent figures in the architectural and construction industry. It was a great evening. Well done Phoebe and all other year 8 pupils who took part! The architect Fiona MacDonald did mention that she was very impressed with the high standard of work she saw at GCH. Miss Hernandez
Y12 students set their sights on Cambridge university
On February 3rd myself and five other Y12 girls were lucky enough to be selected to go on a trip to Cambridge University in order to learn more about the application process and the university itself. We arrived and were taken on a tour around Jesus College which was a beautiful and ancient building with a lot of character and history. After the tour we had lunch
in the Jesus College dining hall which was a really enlightening experience and gave us a real insight into life as a student at Cambridge. We were then split into groups and taken for more tours of Christ College and King’s College which were again beautiful buildings with such interesting history to them. After this we returned to Jesus College and listened to a talk about the application
process and we received some very useful hints and tips for applying. We were told more about the university itself and given a real taste of what it would be like to go to. Overall the day was really enjoyable and informative and encouraged my perception of Cambridge, making me more assured and excited about a possible application there. Imogen Thom
