Grey Coat 8 Issue 10: February 2011 Prefects lend a hand during International Week

How many international-themed activities can you do in a week? That was the challenge the prefect body set upper school with the launch of International Week taking place from the 31st January to 4th February.

Every lunchtime for the whole week prefects ran various workshops and activities to challenge students and raise awareness of what it means to live in a world where international relations are becoming increasingly important. Whether you’re enjoying a curry or watching the news, other cultures and languages will have an effect on our everyday lives, and through this week the prefects aimed to give students an opportunity to try many new things.

During International Week students were able to develop their understanding of other cultures through discussing international art, debating international current affairs, getting to grips with origami, singing in German, watching a foreign film (Le Diner de Cons, the French original of Dinner for Schmucks),

The prefects running classes were also asked to choose a student they felt was particularly enthusiastic and these students will receive prizes in a follow- up assembly we are currently organising about International Week.

A taste of Japanese during International Week

and playing French drama games. Multi-lingual prefects also gave students a taste of some languages not formally taught at Grey Coat, and by the end of the week students were able to count to ten in Arabic and read two of the three Japanese writing systems!

The feedback from students, staff and the prefects themselves was all extremely positive, and we hope that although this was the last major event the current prefect team will be able to organise, the next prefect body will extend and continue our work in promoting languages and international awareness within the school.

Ma’a salama! (One of the many phrases I learnt in Arabic club – goodbye!)

Mock United Nations General Assembly (MUNGA)

The annual GCH MUNGA presentations and debates were held on Monday, 13th December. The debate on biodiversity, 'The UN should act to halt unprecedented levels of extinction amongst the world's plant and animal species', was chaired by Mr Chesterman in the St Michael's sports hall. Roy Blackwell, Clerk to the Governors, presided over the scene in the Great Hall in St Andrew's where the motion was 'The UN should force its member nations to disarm their nuclear weapons'. As might be expected, the sixthformers had much to say and stated their opinions vigorously.
