Literary Society was delighted to be holding its second meeting on February 11th.

On Monday, 15th November, Katie Law had outlined her career as a journalist producing a range of material for the 'Evening Standard'. Last week Francesca Clementis, a former Grey Coat student, came to talk about writing her 6 novels and her current membership of the team producing scripts for "Holby City".

Whilst Katie Law's journalistic route on the 'Evening Standard' had been via Sotheby's in New York and then becoming assistant to the Literary Editor of the 'Evening Standard', Francesca had originally written scripts for radio comedy shows. Katie described the demands required to create the Thursday Books Page and reviewing Stephen King's "Full Dark, No Stars". Her weekly input also included the pleasure of assembling 'Design News' for the 'Homes and Property

Section' and the contrasting challenge of interviewing 'Nicky Haslam on posing naked in Lucien Freud's chair'.

Francesca began by informing members that anyone who wished to write required perseverance and a thick skin. Would-be writers were advised to read "The Writers' and Artists' Year Book" and to view 'Writers' Room' on the BBC website. These would provide opportunities to enter competitions which are monitored by agents who are also to be encountered at award dinners. As the sole writer of chick lit to win an Arts Council Award, Francesca was adamant that, whether writing a novel or a script for "Doctors", each genre has to meet specific criteria and co-operation with employers' expectations is essential.

Literary Society is grateful to Katie and to Francesca for illustrating the different demands of writing careers and for encouraging students to write. Ms McMellan
