Recognising the demands encountered by designers when lighting offices and educational areas, Thorn has made the Elevation luminaire even more efficient and stylish than its predecessors with upgraded optics, controls and aesthetics. The recessed modular fluorescent is enhanced by redesigned central optics, including a new micro prism diffuser and reshaped outer wings. The resulting light output (up to 82 per cent) and efficiency (capable of 59 luminaire-lumens/circuit-watt) exceeds current Building Regulations, while luminance limits below 1,500cd/m sq (louvre optic) minimise glare.

Helvar controls have been used throughout the refurbishment of Nike Town in Oxford Street. Only three button control panels were supplied for the staff to manually control lighting when required. At all other times the system runs automatically, selecting the scenes set by BDP (lighting designers) to the satisfaction of Nike. The Nike maintenance team can make changes with Designer software when required by plugging a laptop into any of the discrete programming points supplied.

Landscape architecture firm Dan Pearson Studio recently installed the visually striking Strobilus major pendant from lighting specialists Paviom. Designed by Jonathon Coles, the Strobilus major takes inspiration from the open pinecone and utilises 100 leaves made from 100 per cent recycled paper pulp mounted on a recyclable body. The overall effect is a soft and organic shape that brings a warm and pleasing ambience to the studio.
