200 green bottles…

A theatre in Newcastle was certainly talk of the town due to a temporary chandelier installation made from recycled wine bottles.

A theatre based in the heart of Newcastle city centre has inventively designed a stunning environmentally friendly chandelier made from 200 recycled wine bottles.

The temporary, half ton centre piece was

produced for Northern Stage's 5th Annual Dinner, with the theatre's designer and workshop team imaginatively interpreting the event's theme of being 'green and resourceful' by reusing daily materials to spectacular effect. Neil Murray, associate director and theatre designer at Northern Stage, has almost two decades experience of designing spectacular sets for the Newcastle venue with the chandelier adding to his portfolio of stage attractions. Murray says: ‘I think where possible, recycling is very important when creating new. Glass is a free commodity if you use old wine bottles, as in this instance. It's also a material that illuminates beautifully.’ Murray has creatively used chandeliers many times throughout his time at Northern Stage. He adds: ‘It struck me immediately that we could produce something stunning with 200 glass bottles.’

The 160 onstage diners enjoyed a one-off theatrical evening coupled with culinary delights; as Stage 1 of the venue's main auditorium was transformed into a glamorous dining room. The chosen themes transfered aptly throughout a building that is already very conscious about considering the environment; one of its many energy saving devices being ceiling lights activated by movement sensors.

Erica Whyman, chief executive and artistic director of Northern Stage, explains: ‘We always want our guests to appreciate the more serious purpose to which they contribute. In the current climate it is more important than ever that we maintain our profile, make new friends and raise funds, so we can continue to produce ambitious yet affordable theatre, nurture the region’s artistic talent and offer young people opportunities to participate.’ Lighting manufacturer ETC helped turn the concept into reality, using a Source 4 Zoom 750W fixture.
