Katie Hawkins is a familiar face in the department of business administration. Hawkins is a 2010 Springfield College graduate who majored in business man- agement, with a concentration in mar- keting, and a minor in both Spanish and economics. While completing her under- graduate work, Hawkins was also active in Junior Achievement (JA). She started volunteering for JA during her sophomore year, and was awarded the Junior Achieve- ment College Volunteer of the Year Award in 2010. Her involvement with JA even led her to accept the special events man- ager position at the Junior Achievement of Western Massachusetts.

Business has had a significant role in Hawkins’ life since she was a high school student in Hudson, N.H. When she couldn’t get into the biology class that she wanted during her sophomore year at Alvirne High School, her guidance counselor suggested a marketing course which involved helping out in the high school’s store. A year lat- er, she was the co-manager of the school store. So, majoring in business manage- ment was not a hard decision for Hawkins to make.

One of Hawkins’ favorite JA projects while at Springfield College was her involvement with the Center for Human Development (CHD) Juvenile Services Program, where she worked with teenagers age 15-18. By

JA IN A DAY

Springfield College and Elms College students volunteered for Junior Achieve- ment (JA) at Forest Park Middle School.

JA’s mission is to inspire and prepare young people with real-life lessons. JA volunteers serve as role models who inspire students to stay in school, work toward a successful career, and achieve their goals.

BUSINESSMANAGER NEWS FROM THE SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: KATIE HAWKINS ’10

“Katie was an excellent student and always willing to volunteer for Junior Achievement. When the position opened at JA, she was a natural fit.”

Brenda Canning, Assistant Professor of Business Administration

writing a business plan and a grant, she as- sisted in the development of a silk screen business for the youth to run, which is still in operation today. “Being involved with JA through the Springfield College Depart- ment of Business Administration provided me with the tools I needed, hands-on ex- perience, and confidence for my career with Junior Achievement,” Hawkins said.

Hawkins’ job responsibilities as special events manager include collaborating with business leaders on fund-raisers, such as annual bowl-a-thons, golf tournaments, and the Stock Market Challenge. Occurring every November, the Stock Market Chal- lenge provides high school-aged and col- lege-aged students from all over the state a taste of Wall Street, with teams compet- ing to see whose mock stock portfolio can achieve the highest overall net worth. Each trading day lasts just 60 seconds, and two months of trading are condensed into two hours. On-site traders with personal digital assistants make buying and selling instantaneous, so trading is fast, furious, and fun. Currently, Hawkins is planning the next Stock Market Challenge, which she hopes will be hosted by her alma ma- ter, Springfield College.

Hawkins truly enjoys her job with Junior Achievement, reveling in the fast pace and the ability to directly impact the lives of students in the Springfield area.
