Renovate It!

You've finally purchased a farm
and it has an existing barn that you would like to upgrade. Perhaps you al- ready have a farm but have decided that a makeover is in order. Either way there are ways of approaching and planning a re- model that make it both a feasible and cost- effective way of providing improvements and property value enhancements to your barn. Here are seven updates that can be com-
pleted by the do-it-yourself horse people that will be appreciated by both the two and four legged users! 1. Steel Exterior Barn End Doors: Are
those wooden doors warping? The tracks bent? Barn end doors made from pre-galva- nized steel and powder coated are a nice way to immediately dress up a barn. If you have a

particularly large opening, consider investing in aluminum doors. They are guaranteed not to rust and are much lighter and easier to handle than either their steel or wooden counter parts. Don't forget to update the track system too! 2. Dutch Doors: Existing doors are easy to swap out, just like

barn end doors. Look for steel doors built with a fully formed outer jamb, much like a regular door frame. These are made to fit an exist- ing opening and the whole unit, doors and frame, simply are screwed into the current framing. Easy! If you do not have openings for dutch doors they are easily added. Simply cut an opening, based on the size you select, and build a simple jamb. These are great safety additions and add much needed ventilation. 3. Windows and Window Grills: Due to cost or layout, dutch doors may not be an option. Windows in stalls are an easy way to add light and airflow. If you are adding glass paned windows, be sure to include a protective grill. These can either be fixed to the window or the barn. 4. Stall Fronts:Whether you have
a clear span modern barn or a 200 year old classic, this is a much simpler task than you may think. It is possible to just replace the stall doors and tracks. Grill- work for the front of the stalls can be added or replaced. For a more complete renovation, a one piece fully framed stall front can be purchased. Be sure to con- sider yoke and feed door options! 5. Stall Mats: Not all rubber stall
mats are created equal, often the straight-edge mats found at local farm stores are very basic. Be sure to select high quality interlocking stall mats. Ask whether they have a lifetime warranty against rolling, buckling and curling. The ones that are worth the upgrade do!
