JUNIOR ILKLEY HARRIERS

Competition results

ll coaching sessions are in full swing and juniors are working very hard. We have gained three extra parent helpers since September and a great number of 14 to 16 year old junior helpers. Sportshall Athletics juniors are working towards their awards and training hard in running sessions for cross-country races. Track & Field groups are preparing for next season with basic winter training. Over the last two months the juniors have been involved in six cross-country events, two in the Wharfedale Primary Schools League. The first at Ghyll Royd School attracted over 500 runners and the other at Ilkley Rugby Club and organised by Westville House School attracted over 460 runners. The competition is really beginning to heat up.

A

West Yorkshire XC League There have been three events in the Complete Runner West Yorkshire Cross- Country League. At the first event at Nunroyd Park 23 juniors raced, with 18 at Huddersfield and 24 at Bramley Park. We have an exceptionally talented group of youngsters coming through the ranks in what is a tough and competitive League. We have been trying to field as many teams as possible and so far we have managed to do that very successfully amongst the girls but not quite with the boys.

The U11 girls have had two third places and a second place; the U13 girls two seconds and a fourth; the U15 girls have had two sixth places and the U13 boys came fourth team at Bramley Park. For the U11 and U13 boys it has been a little frustrating as we always seem to be one

runner short of a team, but their individual results show that once we can get a few more runners out they will be matching the girls results.

PECO League and Curly Wurly In addition we had 13 juniors race in the first PECO cross-country event of the season at Pontefract. Although there is no team event in this competition there have been some good individual performances with Jack Cummings and Sarah Pickering the first boy and girl finisher in the two mile event in third and fifth places respectively, and Alessandra Ricci and Robbie Matthews in third and fifth places in the one mile race.

13 juniors raced at the Curly Wurly rat runs at Haworth so it is good to see that we continue to cover all the athletic disciplines.

Sportshall Athletics In October, 16 juniors competed in the first Bradford Athletics Network Sportshall Athletics low level competition of the season at Richard Dunn and organised by the One in a Million Club. Our juniors are always well prepared, compete hard and deservedly gain medals for their efforts. These competitions are open to non-club members and for school Years 3 to 10 so if you are reading this with a child between those ages who would like to take part in the later ones please let me know. These competitions are also ideal to prepare athletes for the West Yorkshire trials at U11, U13 and U15 levels which will take place in early 2011.

Track and Field In Track & Field Athletics, three U15 boys have been selected for coaching from the Yorkshire and Humberside Regional coaching group at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. Harry Maslen and Daniel
