VETERAN COMPETITION Vet champs from Yorks’ to World

Ilkley Harriers has a strong representation of veteran runners. Henry Heavisides, Road Captain, explores the opportunities for road, track and mountain races and championships offered by vet athletics organisations.

here is a proliferation of races and championships for vets (over the age of 35), normally in five-year age bands. Locally we have the Yorkshire Vets (YVAA), then there is the Northern Vets (NVAC) and British Masters Athletic Federation (BMAF). There are also international masters races, including World and European Championships (road, track and mountain running) as well as the International Cross Country (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland). Most of the championship events at all of the different levels are open to all veteran runners to take part.

Yorkshire Vets www.yvaa.org The YVAA have championship races at all distances on the road from 5K up to half marathon, cross country, track and fell, as

well as relays for road and cross country. Normally the road championships are held as part of an open race, for example the 5K championship is normally one of the races in the John Carr series at Esholt. Amongst the individual prize winners we’ve had so far in 2010 in YVAA championships are Sally Morley, Jane Bryant, Alison Bennett and myself. We also had several teams winning awards at the recent YVAA road relays in Ilkley. I’m sure that we have lots of runners capable of doing well in other YVAA championships, for example the open 10 mile road race at Thirsk on 28 November.

Ilkley Harriers as a club is a member of the YVAA, so you don’t need to join individually. YVAA also run a year long Grand Prix series of races for veteran runners.
