JUNIOR ILKLEY HARRIERS … CONTINUED
England Athletics coaching qualifications. Not only are they double the price, they are now longer in duration and individuals cannot afford the time to achieve the desired equivalent Level 2 qualification. Level 2 allows someone to be insured to coach on their own and lead sessions. We need more Level 2 coaches to reduce the workload on the few we currently have. This would go a long way to making Junior Ilkley Harriers sustainable. From January 2011 we will be providing just over 10 hours of athletics coaching for juniors each week. The programme will be well balanced with roughly four hours devoted to general Sportshall Athletics; four hours of more specific Track & Field athletics and two hours to outdoor running. We also run a comprehensive race programme to complement coaching. The three main coaching areas – Sportshall Athletics, Track & Field and Outdoor Running – cater for different types of children.
Sportshall Athletics
General Sportshall Athletics takes place at Ilkley Grammar School and coaches the fundamental skills of running, jumping, throwing and agility.
It’s indoors so it’s
a good winter option to keep children fit and involved with some form of athletics. On Thursdays we cater for the 8 to 10 year olds (2 x 1 hour with 84 children) and on a Monday the 11 to 15 year olds (2 x 1 hour with 66 children). The nationally recognised award schemes that we follow are relevant to the age groups.
Track and Field
The area which is most ‘under construction’ is the specific Track & Field coaching which is based at Ghyll Royd School. It is the natural progression from SHA so having so many children involved in this activity it was always going to be a likely route to follow. At Ghyll Royd

we now have the facilities in place for all year round athletics; our storage container houses the High Jump bed, indoor shot put circle, hurdles and a bit more. Outside we have a jumps pit with low level lighting so we can use it throughout the winter (when the weather is OK). A major advantage of being based here is having both indoor and outdoor facilities available to us on site. Improved facilities plus specialist coaching is really beginning to raise the standards amongst our junior athletes. On Tuesdays we do two hours of High Jump (schools development group and club group) followed by Jumps (Long and Triple) and Throws (Shot and Javelin throughout the year and Discus and Hammer in the summer). On Wednesdays we are just introducing a Sprint and Hurdling session which gives us the possibility of track work at UAK in the summer term. Approximately 40 children between the ages of 9 to 16 benefit from these sessions.
Outdoor Running
The third important area that we cover is the straight Outdoor Running sessions. On a Saturday we have the Family Fell Run on Ilkley Moor which is an hour long run with regrouping with almost as many parents as children with numbers anywhere between 20-40 depending on the weather. The other running session in the week takes place at the Tennis Club on a Wednesday and is a speed/endurance session for 8 to 15 year olds. The 45 minute session includes warm up, plyometrics, running strides, speed/endurance section and warm down. A lot of emphasis is placed on the correct running style and all children train to a high level. Numbers are usually in the range of 40 to 60 children and we have always been amazed at their commitment in all weathers.
