MEMBER PROFILE Lyn Eden
Age 65, running for about 22 years, joined Ilkley Harriers in 2008.
Why I joined Ilkley Harriers: After being with Nidd Valley Roadrunners for over 12 years I finally realised that it was a road running club. My greatest love is Fell and XC. Amanda Parnaby told me about Pete Shield’s training session on Ilkley Moor. She made it sound just so good we (Jim and I) had to come along to experience this wonderful evening of fun. It was a shock to our systems. We returned the next week just to see if it was as tough as we had experienced that first night. It was, testing, hard and wonderful. So having found a club that included people who ran the fells we both left Nidd Valley and joined Ilkley.
Background: Born in Carlisle, Cumberland, I moved to Leeds 1965 but my outdoor life didn’t really start until 1984 when I discovered the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. My children by then had flown the nest and I turned to walking in the Dales for relaxation. In the 1990s and early 2000s my children emigrated to the opposite ends of the world, so I turned to beekeeping to fill the gap my children left. Now I love my bees, allotment and Jim (not necessarily in that order).
When did you start running? In 1988 when living in Keighley. My first races were the Sportage women’s series. It was suggested that I might enjoy running the Karrimor International Mountain Marathon and started training for this event. En route to work in Harrogate I would stop at Bolton Abbey to run, whatever the weather, and stop off again on the way home to do a longer run. My first Karrimor was in the Howgills, 1989. The weather was horrendous,
